Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Bottle thanks to Dr. Bill
Muddy reddish-brown. Deep cherry aroma with lots of tartness and wood. Really dry...a woody, austere character. Complex palate with some fruit, but almost astringently bitter late. The finish perhaps lacks of roundness but otherwise it’s a really nice sour ale.

Two samples at different times thanks to after4ever and derkruk. Quite surprised this does not have an over 4 score! Loving the label on this one first of all. Poured you get a cloudy brown with a red tint. In the nose you will experience bliss with tons of funky sour cherry notes mixed with fairly overtaken malts. The flavor cuts right down the tongue with a sharp oak touch alongside deep malts and sour cherries. There’s also a combination of sweet malty goodness and even sweeter cherry flavors as well, balancing this brew out in an almost indescribable way. Lovin’ it...LOVIN’ it...!!

Which one of these things is not like the others? Sing it Mes! Another that is probably getting the worst of it due to the fantastic lineup and not fitting with the rest of what we had. All I can remember is what I scored it and that it didn’t have enough cherry and wasn’t sweet enough. Will rerate when I get ahold of another.

A Mes rate: Bottle thanks to Chad.
Murky dark brown with a slight red hue and a thin off white head. Aroma is clearly that of Lost Abbey. Awesome barrelly sourness, vanillary wooden notes and superb strawberries and cherries. Some peat and earth all the way in the background but it balances it out perfectly. Flavour is verging on the edge of greatness. The sourness is absolutely perfect. If this had more sweet cherry to offset the base beer this could be even better. That said it’s still outstanding. Awesome sourness on the finish that is so typically Californian sour. Lost Abbey and Russian River need a sour style all of their own. Totally unique. Utterly excellent. A glorious all rounder and more proof that I love this brewer. God it just needs more cherry.

Muddy brown pour with a thin white head. Aroma had plenty of cherry and oak. Flavor was up front oak, tannins, caramel, and cherry. Medium acidity, lightly carbonated. I like this one quite a bit. Thanks JW77!

Bottle shared by Marcus. A nice mild, sour cherry aroma. No head that lasted. Dark amber/brown color. A little wood in the aroma. Very nice mouthfeel. Lightly sour. Cherry skin. So pleasing the mind goes into suspension. Sour to the end, but pleasantly so.

This reddish brown ale poured with a miniscule beige head, eliciting a sour cherry aroma. This is a mild sour brown ale with woody notes. Apparently, Tomme mislabeled a few cases of this beer, using an Older Viscosity label, but this was clearly Red Poppy, and it’s a great beer.
