Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Bottle shared by Mike who comes into my home and fuckin makes me look like shit when he whips out like 85 awesome/retired/world class beers. Yeah! Pours a red brown . Aroma of cherry, leather, slight cough syrup, plastic, wood. nice. Flavor is lemon, tart fresh cherries, and grape skin. Nice dry finish. A great beer. Wish I had some more handy.

Bottle shared by footbalm, thanks Eric. Pours a rich reddish brown color with a nice fizzy white head. The aroma is great; sweet tart fruits, cherries, and lots of oak. The flavor is similar; a great Flemish Sour, cherries both sweet and sour, sour oak and a light fizzy mouthfeel.

Pours and unexpected copper brown. Nose was very tempting of tart and sweet cherries with a strong lacto pedio presences. Taste is slightly watery in its finish, big cherry taste up front with nice tartness, and a slight sourness.

2008 edition: Rusty mahogany. Vigorous poor yields a small tiny-bubbled head. Acetic acid, prune, port-steeped raisin aromas with subtle notes of iron, oak, almond (cherry pits), minerals, and leather. Minor oxidation (sherry). Soft prickles of loose carbonation. Soft and well-rounded, initially, with a tart and juicy interplay of lactic and acetic acid. Oak exercises restraint as while uniting with the brisk mineralic twinge which absorbs much of the resounding juiciness. Snug oak-derived tannins contribute faint vanilla, though the wood acts merely as a platform so as to highlight rather than pummel the lustrous fruit character. Malt is dry, though virtually nonexistent. Cherries showcase immense depth, all the way from the slick texture of the skin and the succulent flesh, on down to the light almondy character extracted from the pit. Finishes raspy with iron along with a brush of oaken dryness yet still slick and fairly moist with lingering cherry skin and acetic acid. While I certainly enjoy the juicy lactic and acetic notes, I’d love to see those particular characters complemented by some phenolic/Brett action. Nicely structured, as well, though more a *bit* more dryness would help. Pretty good stuff.

What a sour aroma. Wow! This is one tart beer. I’m drinking this through my teeth. A little sticky in the finish, but otherwise excellent.

Bottle @ WTF OMG! Poured a murky deep red. Nose was sour, wine-like, mild funk, cherries, ripe fruits, sour plum. Flavor was fruity and tart, sour fruits, grape skin, red wine, watered down vinegar and oak. Very very nice.

This bottle is some what soooo corny but at the same time so very cool and clasy. The pour is red brownish with a thin white line around the edge of the glass. The nose is crazy.. I rarely dump a tenner...but this one does it. The cherrys are all in your face in a very nice way. The winks to flamish sour ales are still in the air... this one is better that any of those flamish sour ales Ive had though. There is a bit of rusty notes and malt in the nose aswell. The taste is all about cherry.. its very balnced between the sour and sweet notes- very delicate. The palate is creamy and fine with very low carbonation. Thanx Mikkel for popping this lovely little thing.
