Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

This bottle is some what soooo corny but at the same time so very cool and clasy. The pour is red brownish with a thin white line around the edge of the glass. The nose is crazy.. I rarely dump a tenner...but this one does it. The cherrys are all in your face in a very nice way. The winks to flamish sour ales are still in the air... this one is better that any of those flamish sour ales Ive had though. There is a bit of rusty notes and malt in the nose aswell. The taste is all about cherry.. its very balnced between the sour and sweet notes- very delicate. The palate is creamy and fine with very low carbonation. Thanx Mikkel for popping this lovely little thing.

hanks awaisanen for bonusing this one- so generous. Hazy dark brown pour with smallish white head that dissipates quite quickly. Aroma is loaded with dark fruit, tart cherry, cranberry, and slight vinegar. Woody funk, sea salt and earth come through a bit more subtly. Flavor is quite puckery and sour. Tons of cherry, burnt caramelized banana, dark fruit, caramel and marzipan. An astringent acidic vinegar quality burns slightly on the way down, but remains manageable and rounds out the palate nicely. Palate is largely smooth and slippery with a tart, borderline sour finish. Super interesting and complex, though wholly quaffable.

Dark burgundy pour, non-existent head. Aroma is heavy with tart cherry and cranberry, brett, vinegar, a touch of sea salt, and some vanilla that adds to the sweet notes that the fruits portray. Flavor is intense; when the description says "not for the faint of heart," it’s not overstating it. Lots of cherry, more tart fruit, and an intense sweet nutty quality near the finish, almost like marzipan or cake icing. Palate is enticing, an impressively crafted brew; well done again by Lost Abbey.

bottle thanks to bleeng. Pours a ruby red with only clear, white bubbles along edge of glass. Nose is oak and sour cherries. Taste is cherries. Yummy! Mouthfeel is super sour and dry. Pretty good stuff.

Pours brown with a thin tan head. Smells of sour cherries, oak, some residual sugar. Tastes of tarte cherries, sour, dry, oaky, some lactic hints on the finish.

(Trade with Rallison) 2009 Vintage 375ml. Been saving this one for a while now. When popping the cork seemed to be flat as a pancake. Little foam poured in the glass with fine bubbles coating the side of the glass. Pronounced sour aroma. Dusky brown color. Flavor is very mellow. Actually a LOT more mellow than I expected it would be. Let it warm up a bit to get more flavor, but drink it slightly chilled.

Bottle at the Cuvee de Castleton release at Captain Lawrence. Pours a thin clear brown, without much of a head. Big funk and lots of wood on the nose. Softly bretty, smooth, and with a soft cherry flavor. Deliciously large sourness. This was remarkable and I’m going to have to crack open the bottle I got from daknole sometime soon.
