Commercial Description:
Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Bottle at the July Houston tasting, courtesy of Bleeng. Thanks Rick! Pours a deep, mucky brown/red with a quickly fading head of white. Aroma is cedar wood, old attic, and cherry 7-Up. Flavor is sour, sour, SOUR cedar and light cherry/raspberry juice soaked in- drum roll, please- CEDAR! Thin mouthfeel but the beer settles nicely amongst the tastebuds. Great beer!

Bottle in Portland... Thanks Chris. Smells sour and of abricot. Pours a clear brown with a hint of a head. Mellow sourness with some sweetness. Fruity with aromas of sour apples and berries. Quite tart. Almost no carbonation. Medium bodied.

Rating # 3000. 37,5cl bottle @ Hj Hansen, Odense. Pours deep amber reddish with a small bubbly creamy head. Nose is sweet and sour cherries, lots of oak, marzipan and caramel. Sticky and smooth. Very dry with a fine tart bite. Lots of oak. Ends dry with a slight burn. YES - Going for another thousand. Cheers.

Bottled at PBF. Hazy reddish brown color, almost no head. Sweet, sour and perfumed aroma with cherry, strawberry and rose. Sweet and sour flavor with nice cherry and strawberry character. Full bodied. There is some acetic acid which is a bit too sharp for me. Otherwise very tasty sour ale.

Bottled at PBF. Cloudy reddish brown, almost no head. Highly acidic lambic-like barnyardy nose. Sourish with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Lovely and upfront flavour of oak and acidic barnyard. Perhaps not with the same levels of complexity as the best lambics, but still a mindblowingly fantastic sour ale.

Bottled. Amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is sour wood, alcohol, sugar and some dark dry fruity notes. Mild tart cherries as well. Flavour is sour wood, with sweetness. Kind of Cantillon sourness mixed with sweet fruity notes. Very balanced and nice sour ale!
