bottle of the 2009. Well, this certainly is a black beer. The head is a little small, but pretty dark. I go in for a sniff, expecting some Belgian qualities and am instead greated with a straight up intense American styled imperial stout. We’re talking raisins, molasses, chocolate, and some sharp roast. The thick palate is another pleasant surprise. I was just going on my prior experiences with Lost Abbey. . .this is also a great beer but much more intense and straightforward than their other offerings I’ve sampled. The giant flavor has a massive, dry roastiness and hints of black chocolate with molasses every now and again. I’d say sharp is a good descriptor for this one. Big stout. Nice. Some coffee, toffee, and soy sauce. Dark fruit too. Thick and sharp in the mouth. Again, dark fruit, roasted malt and coffee. Thick and gooey. Good stuff. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Feb 28, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark opaque black color with a huge brown head. head receeds to leave a small layer. nose is chocolate and almost a hint of mint it seems. chalky and dry. palate is oily with a bitter finish. chocolate dominates the flavors, some light pruney dark fruit notes appear. but the chocolate dominates, not in a bad way, it is good, just searching for some other flavors and am failing. it is real good though. Chocolate and licorice aroma. Flavor is sweet and bitter, lots of dark fruit and dark chocolate. Really nice, medium bitterness. Thick mouthfeel with a nice carbonation. Lots of dark, bitter chocolate in the finish. Very nice beer, with no detectable alcohol. thenick (744), North Bellmore, New York, USA

Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and licorice. Taste is licorice, dark fruit, and roasted malt, with a nice bitter finish that hides the alcohol very well. I like it; I like it a lot. carruthm (1125), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 22, 2009 Thick black pour with a deep brown creamy head. Licorice, coffee and malt aroma. Thick coating mouth with a licorice and sweet / tangy finish. Coffee lingers on and on. Further sipping brings the bitterness up front. I like this stout, but then again, I like alot of imperials and this is near the top.
