Pours dark brown, opaque in the glass, with a foamy off-white head that has great lacing and retention. Incredibly pleasant aroma. Huge blast of cherries from feet away, funk, oaky vanilla, ripe fruits - plum, some acid. Lost Abbey house character is in this beer. I’m guessing Cuvee de Tomme or Red Poppy or both are in this beer, I have smelled this before. The soft funkiness is just beautiful. Brett presence is high and on the back end there is just a touch of an alcohol aroma. This thing is complex. Somehow there is actually a malt character still alive underneath all the other stuff which is fascinating and impressive. Taste is soft, smooth, slightly tart with delicious cherries and fruit. A bit more malty than the average sour beer. Certainly reminds me of Cuvee de Tomme, can’t say which one I like better. I drank one a few weeks ago, would have liked to have them back to back. This beer is quite lovely. As it warms the combination of lush Montmorency cherries and vanilla/oak is simply marvelous. This is certainly up there in its category right alongside Russian River’s best. I wish I had more of these as I think this will develop really nicely. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 20, 2008 375mL. Pours hazy ruby brown, capped with a moderate sized khaki head. Aroma is on the lactic side, with notes of oak, dark fruit, cocoa, dark cherry, and some balsamic vinegar. Black cherry flavor is in the forefront, with leather, tobacco, light smoke, plum, cherry pits, and tannins adding to the complexity. This is only mildly sour, and is very drinkable. Another nice offering from Lost Abbey. omhper (12180), Stockholm, Sweden

Citric and medium bodied. Spritzy with lots of red berries. Fresheneing and complex where the buttery malt sweetness is well balanced by the citric lactic acidity. It also possesses a caramelly Belgian style yest character that stays in the background. Very drinkable, yet mindblowingly complex and tasty! egajdzis (3622), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA

Pours a dark, murky mahogany with a small off-white head that recedes to a collar with good lacing.
The aroma is full of sour fruits with a generous helping of wood in the background.
The taste isn’t as sour as the aroma would lead me to believe. There is an initial tart kick but it gives way to a sweet candied sugar malt base. There is also some dark chocolate as well as hints of vinegar that lingers through the finish.
The mouthfeel has a very dry-wine feel to it with a slight tartness and good carbonation.
This is an extremely complex brew from lost Abbey. It’s probably not my favorite from them, but I’m glad I got to try it.
