Pours dark brown, mahogany head, deep golden lacing.
Aroma, light tart, wood, malty with hints of berries.
Flavor, light tartness, chocolate malts, with some lingering vinegary mouthfeel.
Tartness is not overpowering and lets the port barrel add a subtle port-red wine palate.
Well crafted, and tasty!

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 19, 2009 The beer pours out a dark brown with no head at all just a bit of fizzy tiny bubbles that rise to the surface after a very rough pour. Aroma is very complex full of tart cherries, figs, raisins, and dark chocolate. I let the beer sit and just breathe for about 15 minutes before every sipping, the aroma is great. Taste is very rich and complex, sourness hits the taste buds first then fading to a winelike flavor of tannins, a hint of roasted chocolate comes in at the end. Very nice. undsioux7 (561), Cologne, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Pours deep brown with virtually no head. Aroma of port wine, cherries and a touck of oak. Taste is sour/tart cherries up front then port wine and dark fruits through the middle, follwing up with a bit of toasted malt and oak woodiness. A bit of soy comes to play also. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 18, 2009 Bottle. Pours with a thin, mocha colored head and a mahogany to black colored body. The head fades as if it was on the top of coffee to a mocha ring with waves across the top. Aroma of oak, wine, chocolate, soured woody creatures, cinnamon, light berry, tar, dry notes, quite complex. Taste is light tart, rich cocoa, light herbal, tons of dry red wine, some acidity, anise, light bitter with a touch of bourbon charred barrel. Big mouthfeel, light bubbles. A boozy feel for a so-called 8% beer. Very interesting. Plan on aging the other bottle for about two years. kosko20 (313), Bemidji, Minnesota, USA

Aroma of sour cherries, caramel malts, bread...some roasted notes. Flavor is sour, tart...a tiny bit of sweetness. Palate is nice but a little under carbonated but not flat by any means. Overall, its solid. JoeTheYounger (288), California, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 4, 2009 375ml bottle, courtesy jdubfl. The body is an extremely dark mahogany color, nearly black. A small, foamy, dark tan head settles to a thin, persistent layer, leaving scant traces of spotted lacing behind. The nose is drier than expected, no doubt the result of the wild yeast from the Gift of the Magi, very dry and woody overall. Cocoa powder comprises the malt base, offering a little sweetness, while vanilla, oak, vinous dark fruits, and dusty brett finish off the nose. The flavor is also cocoa driven, lightly chocolaty, with subtle red grape and black cherry notes. Tart barrel influences, old wood, and earthy leather lend a wild feel. Medium-bodied and tart, finishing dry, the palate is appropriately light in carbonation. Very good brew. chicagodri (1063), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 3, 2009 Pours dark brown with no head and no carbonation. Interesting brew and aroma. Funky aroma, I knew it was going to be sour right away. Heavy malt, dark fruit, caramel, sour cherries, and vinegar as well. Don’t really blend together as well as I would have hoped. Decent, but below expectations (which were high of course).
