fiver29 (703), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Nov 21, 2008 Bottle pours very dark brown color with tan head that laces and lasts the entire glass. Aroma is bourbon, oak, vanilla, and earth tones. Has a heavy body. Flavor is oak, bourbon, alcohol, caramel malts add a nice sweetness. Overall, this is a brew that lives up to the hype. I had read reports that this was beginning to sour so I decided to open it. Not with this one. Not a single sour note. The flavors meld together nicely. This would have been even better given more time. trokini (1027), San Diego, California, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours opaque ruby brown with a ring of bubbles. Nose is bourbon and bourbon alone. Fortunately, the taste rounds out the bourbon with vanilla, oak, chocolate, and cocoa powder. Sadly, and probably because of the build-up to finally having this beer, it left me wanting more. Not complaining, this was excellent, but I still wanted more. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Nov 19, 2008 FoBAB 2008, Chicago: The program lists this as the 2006 batch. This poured a deep brown body with a nice head. The aroma was heavy on the whiskey foolowed by a strong caramel sweetness, a touch of vanilla, and plenty of alcohol. Very malt-centric to the taste with lots of booze and alcohol. It finished on a low alcohol burn. Not bad, but the way folk were raving, I was expecting a lot more. NobleSquirrel (1099), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 18, 2008 Fobab VI. 2006 version. This was one I was definitely looking forward to and made me really want to try the Brandy barrel version, as I would expect it to be light years ahead of this one. Has a nice, big body. Nose is lots of Vanilla and more distinctly bourbon than most bourbon barrel beers. More akin to an Old Ale at this stage with a robust, deep brown body and loads of caramel malts. Very big, lots of alcohol, though clean tasting. Caramel and just enough bitterness to keep it from cloying. Damn, really want to try the Bourbon one now... omhper (12155), Stockholm, Sweden Nov 17, 2008 Bottled, thanks Marsblursi! hazy dark ruby, rich firm head. Caramelly nose with bourbon and higher alcohols. Seemless soft caramelly body where spun sugar meets grapefruit and bourbon. Really full bodied, still the softness makes it drinkable and pleasant. Whereas the bourbon opens for new experiences it also detracts a little from the seemless malt. Still overwhelming and fantastic. AllAboutStout (605), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Nov 16, 2008 Cork popped with much force. Plenty of carbonation and the beer started storming up the neck of the bottle. Pours a very dark brown in color. Some nice bourbon, oak and toffee notes in the nose. Taste is more of the bourbon, but you get the other flavors from the barrel as well. Some nice oak and vanilla help out. Very carbonated and bubbly on the mouthfeel. Would have liked it to be a bit smoother. I preferred this one to the brandy version. This seems to be much more balanced and the flavors seem to compliment each other and work well. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Nov 16, 2008 Pours deep murky brown with tan head. The aroma has malts mixing with oak and mild sweet bourbon and mild sweet and dark roasted malts as well as dark fruity esters nearing the end of the draw. The taste comes across first with sweet malt and sweet bourbon then aged oak and sweet vanilla. The vanilla note really seems to take over toward midway. Very nice offering with rich creamy goodness washing across my palate depositing bourbon, vanilla, oak and mild dark fruitiness into the finish. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Nov 15, 2008 bottle thanks to miketd. black pour with a nice thick cream head. awesome scents of vanilla, bourbon and wood. very smooth on the palate with a big vanilla flavor with hints of bourbon and toffee. slight boozy finish but overall it’s damn good.
