Skinnyviking (4142), Copenhagen, Denmark Aug 16, 2008 Cask. Low but lasting off-white fluffy head. Pitch black body. Coffee hops alcohol aroma. Smooth and pleasant port wine like flavor of coffee and just a hint of vanilla with low carbonation, long veneous aftertaste. Alcohol well hidden. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland Aug 15, 2008 Cask at GBBF 08... WOW i didnt even realise i had the Bourbon version. Deep brown... sweet vanilla nose ... again a light vanilla ... loads od toffeee and sweet malts ... nice mellow ... very warming... didnt really pick up much bourbon... Note were a bit poor as i thought it was a rerate of the normal version. Though i did think it seemed smoother that the normal bottle id tried at RBESG 08 but put that down to being cask. MesandSim (5789), London, Greater London, England Aug 14, 2008 A Mes rate: Gravicask at GBBF. How amazed I was when I saw the Angels share on the cask list at BSF. How utterly flabbergasted I was to discover on my arrival at the festival that it was the barrel aged version. A very attractive black red colour with a thin but lasting bubbly tan head. Huge oak, (massive wood?) rich malt, chocolate, slight peaty earthy notes and some stunning pina colada notes from the coconut infusion from the barrel. Absolutely stunning mouthfeel. Loads of length. Huge stuff all round. Maybe a little over the top and it’s not unusual for me to say that about Lost Abbey, but here it really really works beautifully. Superb beer. maeib (4673), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England Aug 13, 2008 Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - GBBF 2008. A dark, dark brown beer, with an intensely boozy nose. Definite brandy on the nose in my opinion, but the bourbon comes through in the mouth. Fairly sweet and beautifully full and long in the mouth. Excellently full flavoured and savourable. rauchbier (2992), Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, England Aug 11, 2008 Cask, at GBBF 08. Jet black, thin beige shortlived head and minimal condition. Mouthfillingly oily in the mouth with hints of sweet liquorice, coffee, and vanilla backed with oak and a strong spirity air, full and alcoholic in the mouth with more liquorice and vanilla, a slight phenolic roasted note and a delicate sweetness, spirity alcohol in the finish with yet more liquorice and a developing apple note more suggestive of calvados than bourbon. GMCC2181 (844), Bear, Delaware, USA Aug 10, 2008 12.7 ounce bottle from sparky27! Huge THANKS E! This bottle has been staring me down for months now.... I was waiting for the perfect quite moment to sip on this beer. The bottle alone is sexy. The cork was a shooter. The beer it self poured a suprisingly dark color. It barely let any light through. Decent one finger head. Aroma of sweet malts a hint of bourbon. Also the smell oak. Taste is very malty. Nice touch of bourbon. Sometimes brewers over do it, but not this one. Hint of smoke, chocolate, vanilla, oak, caramel dark fruits and spices. All blended together very nicely. Smooth... Very easy to drink. The 12.5 is hidden. The carbonation is a little to high but still good. The texture is medium. Overall a good beer. Thanks E for sending this one my way! Ethereal (1500), London, Greater London, England Aug 9, 2008 Cask at GBBF 08. First beer of the festival for me as well, and what a way to start. A very intense beer with a fierce bourbon and berry aroma coming off the extremely dark brown body. Very flavoursome - lots of vanilla, caramel malt and spices. Very smooth and the finish simply goes on and on. A complex dark ale that all beer lovers should sample. hughie (3015), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Aug 8, 2008 Cask at GBBF ’08. First beer of the festival for me. Some said this would be best. It nearly was too. Very dark brown with no head. Strong, sweet date and dark fruit aroma with leather and liquorice. Intensely sweet, smooth taste with late and surprisingly intenese bitterness. Beautifully crafted beer. What a start to the fest!
