hughie (3016), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Aug 8, 2008 Cask at GBBF ’08. First beer of the festival for me. Some said this would be best. It nearly was too. Very dark brown with no head. Strong, sweet date and dark fruit aroma with leather and liquorice. Intensely sweet, smooth taste with late and surprisingly intenese bitterness. Beautifully crafted beer. What a start to the fest! harrisoni (6703), Ashford, Kent, England Aug 8, 2008 Cask at GBBF 08. Very very deep ruby with lasting beige head. Really very bourbon and vanilla aroma. Wow that’s just too much on the vanilla. Great flavour in the mouth. The original beer struggles through all that vanilla. Great toffee flavour. It’s very very intense. Big and huge. Hot alcohol. Pretty good once it settles down. sloth (1658), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Aug 7, 2008 High velocity uncorking with a spectacular eruption of foam, does,nt look good i thought to myself, hmm. Obviously the head was large and rocky, light brown in color, with good staying power. Surprisingly well carbonated for a BA brew. Lacing was nice, stringy and spotty at the same time, lasting. Appears as an opaque dark brown color, murky, not real inviting. The ashes were the first thing i noticed in the aroma, farly strong but enjoyable, different. Notes of dark fruits, hidden cedar with light earthy and dusty notes not to mention the mellow whisky notes. Full bodied, oily and slick on the palate with a low carbonation level. Gentle whisky flavors greet you backed by dark fruits, plum raisin, nice lumber, dry chewy malts, sorta bready, milk chocolate notes, vanilla, light smoke, cola, cedar notes too. Fruity and alcohol fueled, though gently, finish. Many thanks go out to oldstylecubfan for the bottle that was literaly LOST for a week or so, though no fault of his. Thanks so much Todd! nolankowal (850), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 7, 2008 Bottle. Hazy orange-reddish brown pour with a yellowed head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel malt, raisin, more bourbon and a bit of honey. Flavors of bourbon, caramel malt, dark fruits, a bit of earthy hops. Body was fairly thin, a bit over carbonated, a bit too much booze...sweet and pleasant at times with a sweet boozey finish. Really prefer the brandy barrel take on this brew. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Aug 5, 2008 Bottle sampled at Lost Abbey for RBSG 08. Poured into a wine glass. Deep brown color with lots of cocoa foam and visible sediment. Aromas of bourbon and chewy sweet malts. Flavor is maple syrup/brown sugar with the obvious rich bourbon note. Alcohol is extremely well-hidden. Sticky mouthfeel makes the finish very long. Drinkability is ridiculous for 12.5%. Fin (3382), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Aug 4, 2008 Bottle at Casey and Traci’s tasting 01-08-08, cheers you two for a great evening Dark reddy/brown pour with dark beige head. Oh my, this beer just melts in your mouth wonderful. The first sip tickles and toyfully plays with your tongue sending its gentle carbonation tingling all over the taste buds, then the teeth enamel is receives a lovely slightly sticky, spirity coating as this beer seeks out every single nook and cranny. Vanilla seeps through, this beer is so soft and well done, some yeast, treacle, warmth from the alcohol, ooohhh its lovely, nuff said great beer. piscator34 (1121), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Aug 1, 2008 Bottled sample via (and shared with) oakbluff. Dark brown in colour with strong and fizzy carbonation. Huge licorice, asphalt, booze, and dark fruits on the nose. Complex flavors of cookie dough, caramel, mellow stewed fruit, whiskey, and a hint of earthy hops. Very heavy mouthfeel inspite of all of the carbonation. A "sippin’ beer" if there ever was one. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Jul 31, 2008 Updated: Feb 1, 2009Bottle from a friend. Pours a dark brown color with a big tan head that had good retention and plenty of lacing. The aroma is rich and complex with bourbon dominating the nose, other aromas of butterscotch, raisins and pecans fill in nicely. The flavor is similarly complex; the taste of good bourbon dominates with a host of supporting sensations--there is cloves, roasted barley, cola and pecans--all superbly balanced. The mouthfeel is full, smooth and creamy. The finish is long with a bit of lingering clove numbing my tongue. Overall: A great concoction. The balance of whiskey flavors to beer is superb, the bourbon is up-front but not overwhelming. Very nice.
