doubleo (765), San Diego, California, USA Mar 15, 2008 Got a pint today at the release and also popped a bottle when I got home. Drink it at room temp! Pours very dark chocolatey brown, virtually black. Somewhat fizzy, light brown head, with decent retention, some lace. Smells of vanilla mostly with some bourbon and then oak notes in the background. When I first tasted the beer it was slightly chilled and the flavors were masked by the kind of bitter bourbon and alcohol flavors. As the brew warmed though, the vanilla and oak flavors really came forward to blend nicely with the bourbon. Very well balanced by the end of the glass. I would like to say it’s full bodied, but its not. Medium body, a little overcarbonated, in my opinion.
Thomas_E (5065), Copenhagen, Denmark Sep 8, 2008 Deep brown color with a tan head. molasses, vanilla sweet aroma with notes of fruit, alcohol and bourbon. Molassses and light chocolate sweet flavor with fruity notes. MiP (5119), Flensburg, Germany Sep 8, 2008 Cask at GBBF08. Good roasted aroma, some vanilla, and a vinous hint. Very dark brown colour, small frothy light brown head. The flavour is quite strong and alcoholic, but also sweet enough to balance it. Again plenty of vanilla. Sweet vinous aftertaste with some burning alcohol. Enniskillen (1571), Port Angeles, Washington, USA Sep 7, 2008 Brown with a tan head. Aroma is bourbon, oak, toffee, alcohol, caramel, light chocolate. Taste is somewhat dry, toffee, alcohol, caramel, brown sugar, yeast. bleeng (286), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA Sep 7, 2008 375 bottle. Very carbonated on opening. Black with a fluffy brown head. Nose is whiskey/bourbon/boozy which overwhelms any "beer" nose. Taste is overly bourbon/whiskey and alcoholic. Also hints of raisins, chocolate, sugar. Very sweet and tasty but the bourbon overwhelms everything in this beer. A sipper for sure with a full rich body. kegbear (81), Orange, California, USA Sep 5, 2008 Updated: Sep 6, 2008375 ml Bottle. Dark brown with a huge head. Aroma of toasted coconut, carmel and dried fruit. As it warmed the aroma became more like shellac. Taste is quite boozy with caramel, vanilla, dark dried fruit and some oak. Wonderful.
