Brouwers Hard Liver festival 2009. 2008 Vintage. Dark brown, one of the darkest beers at the fest. Tall smooth khaki head. Big bourbon character, lots of vanilla and a soft cream/icing like flavor that’s gives an almost butterscotch like note. Silky smooth palate with lingering chocolate and plum notes in the finish. Really well built, and by far one of the best of the festival.

Dec 29, 2009 Bought a 375 mL bottle of 2009 vintage at Lost abbey brewery. Even at the brewery they charge $15 for a 12 oz bottle, but its well worth it because this might be the most delicious beverage ever. is it really a beer?... no carbonation at all and i can’t even taste the alcohol. its certainly not a barley wine... way too dark and flat. i agree more with beeradvocate who calls this a strong ale. it tastes like fruit and chocolate and everything about is wonderful. its really the perfect dessert... especially with some vanilla ice cream. mmmmmmm an angels share float!

Dec 28, 2009 10.29.09 750ml bottle. Pours black with no head/slight rimming. Aroma strong of bourbon, bitter, malty. Tastes of vanilla, bourbon, fruity, slight toasty, a bit thin on the tongue. Intensely dry mouth feel.

Dec 25, 2009 375ml bottle poured into a snifter. Color is deep brown with small tan creamy head that leaves nice lacing and sticks around for a while. Aroma is mainly of bourbon and oak, with heavy sweet dark bread, molasses, caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit, and vanilla. Flavor is heavily sweet, with a somewhat dry, long acidic finish. Mouthfeel is full and creamy, with very fizzy carbonation and an alcohol burn at the end. Quite a rich and delicious treat!

Dec 25, 2009 Nose is strong of bourbon. Raisin and alcohol. Pours a dark brown. No head at all, In fact, not a single bubble. Flavor like a shot of bourbon. Caramel. Very sweet. Silky smooth on the palate. No carbonation. A fantastic beer. Unfortunately, cannot rate it any higher due to lack of head and no carbonation.

Dec 21, 2009 Diverse, intense, different every sip but some how this is still tainted for me in some way. Could have one more layer of excellence with a little more carbonation. 2008 vintage. A little bit of a smoky woody aroma. Vanilla flavors with a bit of cocoa a little further down the palate. Lots of red fruit mid palate and a nice sweetness to round it all out. Caramel, plum, earthy tones, all a little bit in there. Finish is a little hot and a little bittersweet. More like a chocolate than a hop finish.

Dec 21, 2009 Bottle courtesy of mar. Very murky brown color. No head whatsoever. Huge whisky smell with roasted notes. Flavor of bourbon and heavy coffee malts. Sharp flavors that linger. A bit of chocolate sits later on. Wow intense.

Dec 5, 2009 Pure black color. Aroma is full of chocolate, vanilla, barley, raisins, and coconut. Taste is nothing short of amazing. You’d have to have it to honestly know what I’m talking about. Flavors include chocolate, vanilla, malts and barley, and dark dried fruit. Has a nice milk chocolaty and vanilla finish with a little bit of dried cherry. WOW!!! This is one amazing brew!

Dec 1, 2009 Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a medium foamy head with little to no retention and no lacing. Aroma of bourbon with light vanilla and balanced sweet rich malt. Taste is a well balanced mix between some deep rich English style malt with light dry fruits and with great notes of bourbon and light vanilla. Body is fuller then average with very low carbonation but still enough to be enjoyable with no apparent alcohol which is surprising considering the clear notes of bourbon. Not bad thought not sure it is worth the price tag or should be ion the top 50 but glad I tried it anyway.
