Commercial Description:
Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak. The beer is available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

2008 ABV: 12.5%, gold lettering, 750ml and 375ml, with 2008 on label
2007 ABV: 11.5%, gold lettering, 750ml only
2006 ABV: 10.5%, black lettering, 750ml only

Pours a dark dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of caramel, dried fruit, sugar, alcohol. Nice flavor, but the alcohol is a little too much. Have to let this sit for a while.

Courtesy of Dunk. Pours a murky brown, with a small swirly light cream colored head. Smells of vagrant apple brandy aromas, Belgian malts, oak, and caramel notes. The flavor has a good bit of the apple brandy flavor that I got in the nose and a good dose of oak as well. The alcohol was slightly noticeable and had some mild burn going down the throat. Seemingly well balanced though for a barrel aged brew. Full on flavor and well crafted. Maybe didnt totally live up to my high expectations, but certainly didnt disappoint.

Courtesy mbumby10....thanks Mike! Pours a muddy dark chestnut brown with golden/burnt orange highlights at the edge. A small, bubbly tan head leaves behind minimal spotty lacing. A swirl of the glass yields thick, droopy legs. The nose is deep, showing ultra-rich notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate, vanilla, and a variety of dark fruits and spices. Brandy isn’t distinctly detectable, the oaky component is quite nice. Flavors follow along those same rich, chewy lines. Caramel and vanilla are just huge here. This one is definitely malt dominant, with spicy, earthy hops showing just a bit on the back end. Feels quite substantial and smooth in the mouth. This is a great beer, but the Bourbon Barrel version is even better.

Merritt Island Throwdown ’08: Bottle, courtesy mgumby10. Pours a turd-water brown, with wet dripping lacing and virtually no head. Caramel aromas, brown sugar, molasses; chocolate and vanilla interplaying. Rich flavors, mostly caramel and brown sugar, with a vanilla cake-like richness that doesn’t go unnoticed, and a unique maple syrup-like finish. Medium-bodied, and very sweet. Delicious.
