First off... Thanks to my lovely wife for putting up with my uber beer geekdom over the last year and a half. Thanks babe!
Thanks to the amazing generosity of the entire ratebeer community! I would have not been able to try a third of these beers if it weren’t for all of you
Lastly, drewbeerme (for supplying the bottle), pantanap (for supplying the place) and holdenn (for supplying more beer and good company) as I reach my #1000. Cheers to the Chi-Town crew!
The beer. 750ml. Tart brett initially on the nose. A slight touch of musty basement. Oak, cherry skin. More specifically, new oak. Very pretty. Pours dark amber with a 1/4 inch creamy white head. Flavor consisted of brett, brown sugar, dry wood tannin. Tart and crisp. Slightly vinous. Refreshing. Medium body on the tongue. Lively carbonation with a lengthy earthy and slightly dirty finish. I’ve never had the three beers that are the makeup for the 003, but this is damn fine in it’s own right.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 6, 2008 750mL Bottle thanks to kramer17801. Funky aroma, with apple candy and cotton. Horsey. Bits of booze. Really interesting and complex. Airy and dry, yet with many figments of fruit and wildness. As a garden in Belgium might be. Raisin colored pour, with amber finges and a soft, white head. Beautiful. Clearish. Flavor is a foaming monster of more complex Brett. A nip of caramel comes along with vibrant citrus, cotton and lemon rind. Very tart and dry. Fresh. As opposed to 001, this is very lively and prickles the tongue with a complex dry tartness. The Brett has really morphed the three base beers. Unfortunately, besides a minor bit of barrel-aged alcohol, I can’t grab at the Angel’s Share too much. The house yeast really comes out in this beer. The CdT has been put into submission by the overall blend and the second round of Brett fermentation. 001 tastes like three finished beers blended together. 003 tastes like three beer bases blended together and then fermented together again. This sublimates individual character for a unique finished product. I’m just not sure I’m that excited about it because I’m having trouble gathering much beyond a delicious muddled Brett by-product. I mean, it’s a stunning Brett beer, but I want some more individual qualities to shine through. And at some points, I feel like the Brett went a little too far and could have left some residual sugars. Regardless, quite a phenomenal blend. pantanap (1341), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Cloudy brown body with a large rocky, beige head with chunky lace. Big berry nose with cherry, caramel, some pear and dusty chocolate. The flavor is lightly sweet, moderately tart with cherry, vanilla, toffee, raisins, prunes and black berry. Medium/full body is round with moderate carbonation.16 LaMichael (4999), Colorado, USA

Pours with a huge off-white head, very carbonated and lasting in the glass. Funky strange fruit nose of creamed black cherries, some brandy, some farmhouse prickly peppery notes and some dry leather notes as well. Prickly, frothy, and tart up front, developing more of a tart and moldy plum character, some sort of strange olive and twig flavor. I can’t say I get much of the Angels Share in this, but certainly do get the Cuvee de Tomme. It’s soft and pillowy on the palate, uplifting and airy, while still demanding presence. The brett, leather and sour cream tartness is most prevalent at warmer temperatures, it’s certainly distinct and unique, and over the lifetime of my glass I really grew to like it. Very intriguing beer, but as is the case with nearly all Lost Abbey, there’s some sort of house character that keeps me from gushing about it. kmweaver (2453), Sebastopol, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 5, 2008 750mL bottle, no bottle #, courtesy of kramer17801. Thanks, Jason! Pours a dark, murky orange-brownish color; huge, textured light tan head with solid retention and medium-bubbled lacing; solid pour. Lots of overripe red fruits in the aroma: tart citrus, fruit leather, and dense cherries and strawberries and some brown sugar in the nose. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lots of chewy brown sugar, oily dried red fruits, and vaguely tart cherries and strawberries; solid blending, slightly chalky and drying; just generous and tasty stuff. Honestly, I like the slightly more-tart character of the Veritas 001. Lengthy finish, showing brown sugar, fruit leather, and loads of sugar and strawberries and cherries.
