Malty and sweet aroma, some alcohol in the aroma aswell. Has a malty and a roasted taste. Also some sweetness and you can feel the alcohol. Caramel in the aftertaste. A pretty good double bock. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 29, 2005 Bottle from OnlyFineBeer. Red-brown coloured, slight head. Sweet aroma of malts, alcohol, dark sugar and perhaps a hint of fruit. Smooth mouthfeel, sweet taste with caramel, a hint of fruit and a touch of sourness. Good dopplebock but not outstanding. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 26, 2005 Huge dark beige head over brown chestnut, clear beer. Dark malts, herbal, parsley and just a bit bready nose, some molasses, maybe some Maillard? Burnt & roasted caramel flavours, dark roasted bread with sugar syrup. Retronasal clearly alcohol, much sweeter and the beer develops an agreable blackcurrant flavour. Bit fizzy MF, alcohol warming, well bodied beer. Rather basic Doppelbock. Nothing wrong, but trying to drink it all evening would bore me to death before ever getting me in trouble. MiP (9089), Sønderborg, Denmark

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | May 28, 2005 Bottled. The aroma wasn’t inviting. Too much grass and just hints of butterscotch. Brown color, light brown head, good lace. Bit unbalanced beer, very sweet with butterscotch and rather bitter towards the finish, warming and even alcoholic, little sticky. Not bad, but not to get excited about. Sully (1367), Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 18, 2005 OK, I need to temper this rating with the treatment I received from the pub where I tried this. I was sipping and writing when the owner sees me being more of a nerd than the usual punter who just drinks the stuff. He asks about the notes and appreciates that not only do I understand what Rheinheitsgebot means but I can pronounce it. He beckons to the lovely Czech bar staff member (a female if there are any out there who are unsure of my sexual orientation) and asks that she prepare the tasting tray for me. That plus great hot snacks and a freshly baked pretzel (brezel) turns a potentially expensive tasting into an absolute bargain. Now the hard part is to be objective. Presentationwise this is a beaut, sensational deep copper colour and a creamy head. The nose is very big on malt and caramel, lile a Caramello Koala with balls. Flavour is equally impressive with rich sticky date overtones and rich, beautiful mouthfeel. Am I swayed by the service???? Aaaaah, c’mon. this 20 something gorgeous barmaid tells me that she loves dark beers and delights in talking to knowledgeable and handsome older men about beer.........................so YEAH.
