Smells and tastes like an old ale and a malty brown ale combined. Not too sweet, rich and a sipper. One of the best German beers I have had, and unique for what I have ever had. Complex between the malt and what seems like a German barleywine.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 10, 2008 Uber-malty beer that has nice toffee notes and demands a hunk of roasted meat. Bottle pours dark brown with mahogany highlights, tan head lasts a while. Nose is not too strong but aroma includes toffee, caramel, chocolate, tootsie-roll. Moderately sweet flavor checked by moderate bitterness, which adds to malty backdrop impression of bitter dark chocolate. It all melds together well, even if balance lens a bit toward bitter – which is OK with me.
