Commercial Description:
Called Reserve Mead in the UK and Special Reserve Mead in USA. ABV is around 16.5 - 17%.
Despite the annual dating, the recipe is the same each year.
Matured for six months in Oak Barrels which have previously been used for rum and whisky maturation. The mead picks up flavours of the whisky and rum, and is then filtered and bottled. The finished product is a completely different type of mead, more complex and drier than traditional versions.

Bottle: Clear gold in color, some legs, not much though. Aroma, honey and some fruits, faint spicing, some vanillla. Flavor, honey, hints of oak, some apple, a bit hot, and on the dry side. Not bad though.

2006 Vintage. 750 ml bottle. Pours a rich amber gold with no head. This is a still mead. Strong honey aroma mixes with the oak aroma, but the two just don’t seem to come together. The flavor seems even more discordant, with lots of honey and oak, but the two flavors are fighting one another instead of melding into one. Semi-dry. Very strong alcohol burn lingers well after the swallow. This feels more like a honey liqueur than a mead.

My favorite of the lurgashall meads. Full honey aroma. Some carbonation. Sweet, but not sugary, and not as sweet as some others. Flavor has honey and apple, with just a hint of alcohol that does not detract from the experience.

Many thanks to eaglefan538 for sending me the one bottle I couldn’t find locally for my Lurgashall flight. Crisp yellow color with a rich smooth honey nose. Les sweet than I’d expected, but very, very nice.

Thanks to Brewfiend. Light pale straw yellow color. Very sweet concentrated honey with a nice almost rose like floral sweetness on the end of the nose. Nice sweet honey upfront with a light sweet citrus finish. Very nice balance, and not overpoweringly sweet at all.

Special Reserve label; 2006 Vintage. Mead and 300 night at Brewfiends; this one thanks to him! Light yellow color. Powerful clover honey aroma with a strong hit of flowers. A bitter clove honey taste up front, but it finishes quite sweet.

A 2005 vintage shared by Brewfiend. Pours a clear golden Chardonnay beverage. Texture is smooth, silky with high alcohol character. Aroma of sweet light clover honey, some Caribbean light rum and a hint of apple. Taste is sweet honey, rum and just a touch of apple vinegar. Finish has a short lived sweet light honey flavor and high alcohol burn.

Sampled at Tria Fermentation School’s mead class, 5/8/07. Clear orange amber, no head. Aroma of honey, alcohol, oak and peat. Sweet at first, then peat, oak and smoky flavors more notable. Some warming alcohol.
