Commercial Description:
Sold as Spiced Mead in the UK and as Metheglin Mead in the USA.
Honey sweet mead infused with a secret blend of herbs and spices to a 16th century recipe.
Beloved of Queen Elizabeth I, Metheglin is a sweet honey mead infused with a complex blend of herbs and spices. Metheglin is derived from the Welsh word meddyglyn, meaning “medicinal liquor”, as healing herbs were often stored as metheglin so they would be available over winter. The aroma of Lurgashall Metheglin is enormous. The herbal and spicy character, in particular the resiny character of thyme & rosemary, are fully evident on the palate as well. Clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg intermingle with the sweet honey flavor. Its big body, underscored by about 13.5% alc./vol., ends in a sweet-spicy-slighly tart /dry finish. Intriguing and mysterious.

Bottle from Jungle Jim’s. Poured clear golden color with good legs. Heavy spicy honey aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium to heavy honey sweet flavor with a medium spicy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Pleasing smooth alcohol burn. Nice change of spicy pace for a mead.

Alcoholic nose, with some sweet honey and spice notes. Flowery oils on the palate, some jasmine, lots of alcohol and loads of honey sweetness, that overwhelms any kind of complexity this might have had. Pancake syrup viscocity on the palate and on the rim of the glass. Just too much, it’s overpowering

Bottled. Golden coloured. Unclear. Loads of alcohol, sweetness and honey in the aroma. Has some flowery and spicy notes. Flavour as well full of spices, alcohol and honey sweetness. As allways with mead, it seems a little cloying to me. Is medium bodied. Sweet and syrupy. Has alcohol and honey in the end. Definately not the worst mead I’ve tried, but I can’t really get into this.

Bottled. (as Spiced Mead) Courtesy of Papsoe. Clear, yellow mead. Heather, honey and alcohol in the aroma. Quite floral. Honey-sweet flavor with some alcohol and quite a lot of heather. A bit papery in the mouth, medium to thin body. Overall, it is quite decent, but a bit too boring and sweet. (071006)

Blond color. Honey aroma, a bit too much medicine. Sweet flavor, with honey and too much flowers, sweet spicy touch too. Ordinary.

Bottled. A light golden beer with no head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of honey, and so is the flavor though combined with a powerful note of alcohol as well as medium notes of spices and rose hips.
