Commercial Description:
Sold as Spiced Mead in the UK and as Metheglin Mead in the USA.
Honey sweet mead infused with a secret blend of herbs and spices to a 16th century recipe.
Beloved of Queen Elizabeth I, Metheglin is a sweet honey mead infused with a complex blend of herbs and spices. Metheglin is derived from the Welsh word meddyglyn, meaning “medicinal liquor”, as healing herbs were often stored as metheglin so they would be available over winter. The aroma of Lurgashall Metheglin is enormous. The herbal and spicy character, in particular the resiny character of thyme & rosemary, are fully evident on the palate as well. Clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg intermingle with the sweet honey flavor. Its big body, underscored by about 13.5% alc./vol., ends in a sweet-spicy-slighly tart /dry finish. Intriguing and mysterious.

A deep, golden yellow coloured mead, served in a wine glass. an immediate hit of mulled wine-like aromas, plenty of cinnamon and clove accompanies the sweet honey aroma. The taste is sweet, rounded honey flavour is matched by the cinnamon lead spicy flavour, then the flavour becomes a touch medicinal, but pleasant. Tasted at the Cider stall at the 2007 Cambridge Beer Festival, the last thing, and a wonderful way of finishing the evening!

Metheglin label, from the blue max. Wow, was this a surprise. As Skyview and others commented that night, Christmas in a bottle. Exceptionally well blended cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice intermingled with the honey nose. Very similar taste, but exceptionally smooth for such a highly spiced mead. Oh, and a beautiful rich golden color.

Methgelin label. Mead and 300 night at Brewfiends; this one thanks to him! Dark yellow color. Aroma of cloves, cinnamon and pine. Sweet honey taste with cinnamon and allspice. The hands-down winner of the night for me. Very much a Christmas mead.

750 ml bottle. Pours a clear, rich honey gold with no head (this is a still mead). Wonderful aroma of sweet honey and spices. The flavor was equally as enjoyable with lots of sweet honey along with cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and ginger all noted. A bit syrupy, but this is very much a mead to be savored slowly, so the mouthfeel fits it quite well. Very well done and a perfect way to end a cool, crisp weekend.

Thanks much to Brewfiend for sharing. Pours a nice dark yellow color. Nice clovey, christmasy piney cinnamony spicy nose. Wow, great balance on the palate with a nice, but not overwhelming honey flavor, as well as some cinnamon, nutmeg, and as Ben said allspice. Wow, very nice mead.

Honey aroma. Light spices with sweet honey. Some nutmeg, fruit, a little cinnamon, my 2nd favorite from Lurgashall.

Bottle... Clear light yellow mead. Herbal, honey-sweet aroma with a hint of menthol. The flavor is nice for sipping. Ultra-sweet, but that’s expected; it’s mead. I’m not picking up the nutmeg or clove, but I’m getting a cinnamon vibe. Full-bodied and oily/syrupy with only a whisper of carbonation... maybe not even that. Finishes sweet and a touch grassy.

Bottle. [Courtesy of Hildigöltur, quality tasting @ Papsoe] Spare and diminishing head. Spare lacework. Clear flat looking body with a yellow color. Aroma of hospital, sweat, cheese, spice, honey and fresh apple. Full bodied with an alcoholic texture and a soft carbonation. Heavy sweet flavor with light acidic notes. Warming honey sweet finish with an almost coconut and almond finishing touch. 28-09-2007
