Black as night and allowed almost no light penetration. The head was pretty thin and very brown. The aroma left something to be desired complexity wise. There was definite sweetness and mild lactose, as well as what seemed to be alcohol (although the taste begs to differ). The flavor boasts much more roast than the aroma, sweet maple (overall a sweet brew), mild lactose. Sweet is definitely key here, but not cloyingly. It is a satisfying sweetness that leads me to believe that this would be a good session stout since it is in no way offensive or harsh to the senses. The palate is light, yet appealing and leaves a pleasant feel in the mouth. The finish leaves a roasted marshmallow taste in the back of your mouth and makes it easy to drink the rest. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 29, 2007 The color is dark chocolate/black. It looks like an imperial stout, in color. The head was medium brown, thin, fizzy, and disappeared quickly. The aroma was dark roast, coffee, very light sour notes, sweet, maybe some hint of licorice. For being only 4.9% abv, the alcohol smell was noticable. The flavor was more roasty in flavor than in aroma, but I smelled more alcohol than I tasted. I tasted sweet malt, and tasted very random light sour notes amongst the sweetness. The palate was smooth and had a medium body. The finish was roasty and long lasting. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 28, 2007 ahh, I drank may of these just after college when I could afford the good stuff. got it from state line liquors in elkton MD, who introduced me to craft beer. body is blackish/dark brown like the color of blackstrap molasses, and a big rocky burnt umber colored head. glimpses of ruddyness at the edges. aroma is like root spices, sweet and a little roasty malt. flavor is unsweetened birch beer, sweet chocolatey malt like a latte with carbonized sugar, sort of creamy and creamy mouthfeel. pretty impressive for such a widely distributed brew that’s been around for awhile and still does good under buyout from boston beer co. jlruthven (137), Milledgeville, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 25, 2007 From the bottle at Highlander Pub in Augusta, GA. Poured a rich black, with a full two-finger dark tan head. Smells of chocolate and nuts. Taste is very chocolaty, nutty, some molasses in there too. Honestly a little too straightforward for me, but still quite enjoyable. cewldre (268), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 24, 2007 Bottle from kenb: I just noticed that this beer is brewed in my hometown (the American version of it) yet I dont think I ever really noticed. Shame on my. Anyways, thanks ken for sending this beer home to me. If only I wasn’t so foolish. Anyways, this poured nice and dark with a solid tan head. This smells like a good amount of chocolate. I also note some coffee like smells and some dark fruit smells too. Taste has a pretty cappuccino type flavor, with choclate in there. Very smooth. This is just the right amount of sweet. Easy drinking. Mrthirstyneck (341), Minnesota, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 19, 2007 Pretty good. Malty chocolate aromas. Little bit of a coffee flavor in this. Feels really sweet. Smooth mouth feel. My only thing is, this beer really smelled bad. Like a band aid.
