Huge aroma, pleasantly chocolatey, freshly baked oatmeal cookies and a touch of licorice. The body is a bit thin, but the flavor is great. Light mouthfeel with very chocolatey malts (chocolate pudding). Has a later mocha coffeeish character and a slightly roasty finish. Low bitterness, smooth and highly drinkable. henryalvz (32), Tampa, Florida, USA

Pours very dark almost black with a milk chocolate brown head.Aromas of bitter sweet chocolate malt and toasted barly with a hint of coffee.Flavors of mocha coffee and sweet bitter chocolate and just enough alcohol to keep it from being to sweet.A smooth creamy beer that is very satisfying. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Oct 13, 2006 Black as used motor oil would be an apt description of this beer’s appearance. It also has the darkest head I have ever seen. The head doesn’t last long, however, and leaves a very thin ring. Roastiness and malt dominate the aroma. Mouthfeel is somewhat more thin than expected ( and hoped for) and there is virtually no carbonation. There is also no bitterness or aftertaste here. Tastes of nuts, coffee, chocolate and sweetness dominate. The sweetness seems to get stronger as the beer warms and the glass empties and the beer also feels creamier in the mouth. maltdog (518), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Oct 12, 2006 Java pour raises a sturdy brown column of foam that steadily slumps like ice cream on a hot day. Gentle aromas of smoke and toasted hazelnuts with tenuous suggestions of flame-charred marshmallows, rum-and-butter, and almonds. Sweet flavor is faintly roasty; also notes of chocolate Yoohoo, black currant tea, and hot frothed milk. Like a fiberoptic Christmas "tree", the sweet finish morphs from sugar to coconut macaroon. Smooth, soft palate, almost feathery. Honeyed fig aftertaste leaves a slight tacky texture like limey wellwater. This beer walks a tightrope from oversweet to underflavored, yet maintains a precarious balance throughout.
