A dark malt beer which is brewed to give an excellent balance to the palate. The characteristic aromatics and flavour being derived from the inclusion of dark malts. Bottle. Pours with an average sized dark brown head over a dark ruby-black body. Subdued chocolate-coffee aromas and taste with a balanced finish.

Bottle from Kris Wines, London. ABV 4.8%, according to the label. Very dark brown with a huge beige head. Good roasted malts aroma with hints of espresso. Sweet roasted malts, some bitterness. Quite nice, though more stout character than schwarzbier in my opinion.

Draught at Mac’s Brewbar, Auckland. Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and hops. All pretty subtle though, the palate in quite thin. Low bitterness. Not bad.

Pours black with brown edges, and a creamy tan head. Smoky, roasted malt like a stout yet sweet honey and herbaceous notes like a belgian blonde. Very mild notes of coffee and hops. Nice bitterness in the flavours balanced by a vanilla sweetness. Tones of burnt malt, mellow coffee and apricot fruit. Very nice and light on the palate whilst retaining fairly complex flavours. A bitter aftertaste that ends kind of smoky.

Pours almost black, with ruby. Brown fluffy head. Sweet aromas of chocolate, nuts, caramel. Flavour is nice, a bit sweet. The roasted malt chocolate flavour is there, with some bitter hops and malt.

On tap 01.05.09. Black brown, off white head. Aroma is chocolate, malt, and roasted nuts. Flavor is the same with an oily body, caramel, pine, coffee, dry finish. To me, this is more like a dry stout.

Bottle 330mL. Chocolate malty aroma. Very close to black beer with a hint of red in it. Good size head and good head retention (tan colour). Smooth tasting black beer. Chocolate malty taste. Not burnt tasting at all. Short finishing and a bit weak in flavour compared to other good black beers.

On tap at Mac’s Brewery, Wellington (NZ). Opaque black body with average beige creamy head. its malty/hoppy aroma carries black chocolate and roasty hints. Taste is OK but lacks complexity and ends with a decent bitter/roasty finish. Honest effort.
