Commercial Description:
A light-coloured lager conditioned over 30 days. It has a good head, balanced sweet/bitter palate and a clean aftertaste. Brewed for the connoisseur, Mac's Gold is brewed using only choice Motueka hops and quality barley. The bottom fermentation process of brewing by using a gravity system produces a naturally-brewed, all malt lager that contains no added chemicals, preservatives or colouring.

This beer seems to be held up as an icon in NZ, but why? Sure it has a somewhat romantic brewery story behind it (although it is now owned by Lion breweries, who in turn are majority owned by Kirin), but the beer doesn’t measure up. It looks okay, but the flavour has (as another rater called it) a hint of sour citric. Something just doesn’t taste right. I think it is a poor "craft" beer.

Draft at an Irish pub (can’t remember the name) in downtown Auckland. Pours clear gold with a medium white head. Light and earthy, with hay, malt, and wheat in the aroma and flavor. Simple and just as good or better than the American macro lagers.

It is golden with a creamy white head. The aroma is mild with notes of malt and flower. The flavor is mild too with notes of malt, flower and the slightly dry finish has light citrus notes. It’s uncomplicated and easy to drink.

Bottle. The hops don’t seem to do their job for this one. Light and malty aroma, and sweet taste. Palate is thin with low carbonation. Yellow colour with a thin head that doesn’t last.

330ml bottle from Waitrose. Straw with minimal white head; musty malt aroma; sweet malty flavour with very light carbonation; lacking any hops. Not exactly unpleasant, but nothing going for it.

Bottle. Medium high and lasting off-white creamy head. Clear golden body. Mild and sweet malt aroma. Mild and sweet relatively thin bodied malt flavor without much hops bitterness. Low carbonation and a short sweet aftertaste.

330ml bottle. Poured amber and gold in colour with a thin white wispy head and the foam drifts to one side of the glass. Aroma of floral hops with a touch of citrus and dried fruit. Taste is okay and goes down well. Feels smooth in the mouth and would be good for a session.
