yalnikim (647), Wellington, New Zealand Jul 16, 2007 Tasted a week or so after the release. No date on my notes, but I remember we were on our way down to the Malthouse, where Luke Nicholas was giving away free Monk’s Habit and Epic (Neil Miller was having no trouble accepting them). Two "pint" glasses. One freezing cold, while the other sits above the fireplace to warm up. Chocolatey, with a "whoompf!" of over-extracted espresso. Other than that it’s smelling and tasting like Sultry Dark. Once it gets warmer, the base beer seems to thin out a bit and show of the mildly unpleasant astringency of the coffee. Overly toasted toast and filter coffee is scrawled in my note book. I liked the idea but think they missed the mark somewhat. Ended up tasting a bit like beer + filtered coffee + burnt toast (true, that’s better than it would be without beer - but only just). kempicus (162), Wellington, New Zealand Apr 22, 2007 Awful awful beer....if that’s what it really is? tastes like Kahlua and Coke OStreetBrewery (95), Wellington, New Zealand Sep 13, 2006 Tasted 3 times. All from keg .
1st tasting at Shed 22 day after Mojo was released. Little to no coffee characteristics evident, sulphur aromas unpleasent became chocolaty as warmed but still no coffee, disapointing.
2nd tasting at NZ beer awards , much different, extracted coffee aroma like that of the tamping bin, rich slightly cloying but pleasent coffee flavour , alittle light in bodey.
3rd tasting at Backbencher,. muted coffee aroma , still alittle like extracted grinds, rich coffe on palate , diminished bitterness. pickled (40), New Zealand Aug 25, 2006 Wow, this really is a knock-out Stout. I’m surprised no one has reviewed it on this site yet as it’s been at the brewery for several weeks and has been written up in the papers too. It looks great, smells of coffee and tastes wonderful. The best beer from Macs so far in my opinion. It has roasty-toasty notes and a lingering bitter aftertaste. The brewery serve it too cold. Buy several pints at once and enjoy them over an hour or two - the flavour improves as the beer comes up from the lager temperature it is served at.
