Cocoa, leather and vanilla with a little roast and licorice in the aroma. Light in body but smooth on the palate with flavors of chocolate and a little bit of hops. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jun 3, 2005 Fairly dark brown pour. Light tan creamy head. Minimal aroma... some vanilla lactic chocolate. Flavor is a sweet cream chocolate and lactic acid with some perfumey hops. Its okay, but it isn’t as huge as I wanted. 5000 (2455), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 30, 2005 Bottle: Nearly black, large foamy light brown head, very nice lacing. Seems to be nearing the Stout side in color. Nose of burnt malts, cocoa, bitter-sweet chocolate, and light coffee. Much the same on the tongue, slightly creamy. Decent body and mouthfeel. Slightly dry finish, mostly roasted malt and coffee.   Slight lactose.   Cocoa/Chocolate aspect has left the building. Not big, but somewhat smooth and flavorful.

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 18, 2005 Dark brown. Sharp hops in the nose, yikes, with light hints of vanilla, roast and mocha. Flavor is heavily astringent, hoppy, dry with a lingering bitter bite on the finish. Lacking malt complexity in the flavor and body, but those hops still taste pretty good.... fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 13, 2005 12 oz. bottle. Poured black/brown with a great dark tan head that lasted most of the glass. Lacing also ran all the way down. Aromas of chocolate and a little espresso. But the flavor fell a tad short. The flavors were sweet and roasty, but a bit thin. Very smooth on the finish. Not a bad beer. bombshelter (349), Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 5, 2005 bottle from brickskeller. aroma is a little roasty.
flavor: like a delicate coffee roast. a little sweet (sorta like a krispy kreme donut) in front, but finishes dominated by mellow roast and the perception that i’m eating a piece of overcooked toast. still pretty good, but weird. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 1/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Apr 15, 2005 Bottle. Black color with a quick diminishing head that turned into just a black pool. Slightly roasted aroma. Taste is sweet and without any real structure. No real hoppiness to balance out all of the chocolates. Below average. BillyM (149), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 13, 2005 Updated: Apr 25, 2005Not quite as creamy as the name led me to believe, but still a good rich sweet flavor - maybe a bit too chocolaty for my taste. Still, a very good stout for the price and worth remembering. [$6.38/6pk]
