Commercial Description:
Mac Frost is a big, rich beer in the tradition of English strong ales. We begin with pale and Munich malt along with three varieties of caramel malt for gusto and big, creamy flavor. For balance we add Northern Brewer hops for bitterness and East Kent Goldings for aroma. We take it even further in the finish by dry-hopping Mac Frost with Oregon’s own Willamette hops and English Colthup Goldings. The result is tantalizing; a big beer that delivers with savory malts and complex, lingering hop spice on the tongue and in the nose. This beer will complement your holiday cheer like no other.

A deep, rich copper/brown/red beer with a short & creamy tan head. Aroma is initially sour caramel, but I found some sweet molasses and citrus (tangerine) to put things back on track. Hops lean towards acrid with some "zoo" aromas. Citric bitterness fights with pruney malts and everyone loses. No... it’s not that bad... spices are the saving grace on this end and additional licorice & raisin add interest. Finishes hoppy like an IPA with alcohol.

2003 vintage: Aroma is a old stench of malt and stale raisin and figs. Appears a dark amber brown color and also keeps a decent sized amount of foam on top. Flavor is a reminder of aged caramel malt that has morphed into a over bearing flavor of cigar tobacco, raisin., fruitcake bread and a minor aftertasting of toffee or perhaps coffee.

(bottle at oliver Twist, Stockholm) Clear brown with almost no foam at all. Aroma of cream, toffee, nuts, caramel with a spicy undertone. Nutmeg, pepper, caramel in flavou. Creamy mouthfeel. Floral aftertaste with buttery undertones.

2005, from the bottle.

The best thing about this beer is the aroma: a lovely blast of big leafy Goldings hops. I certainly enjoyed that.

The worst thing about this beer is everything that follows. The flavor is your typical Pacific-Northwest-Tries-An-English-Strong-Seasonal too bitter for the dark roasted malts and too much dark-roasted malts for the bitterness. Worse still, the bitterness is more metallic than appealing and the malts are more burnt than chewy. Usually when brewers go in this direction, the heavy hops and heavy roasted malts fight it out on a battleground of a big beer palate, but this one doesn’t even have that much to offer. The palate is way too watery, thin and quite carbonated, like a bad generic brand cola. On the positive side, I did manage to get through most of the glass while typing these comments, so it’s better than a drain pour.

Still, I won’t be back soon unless I’m stuck in airpart bar with the choice of this, Bud light, or Coors.
