Commercial Description:
Mac Frost is a big, rich beer in the tradition of English strong ales. We begin with pale and Munich malt along with three varieties of caramel malt for gusto and big, creamy flavor. For balance we add Northern Brewer hops for bitterness and East Kent Goldings for aroma. We take it even further in the finish by dry-hopping Mac Frost with Oregon’s own Willamette hops and English Colthup Goldings. The result is tantalizing; a big beer that delivers with savory malts and complex, lingering hop spice on the tongue and in the nose. This beer will complement your holiday cheer like no other.

Bottle. Caramel and fruit aroma. Mild hop and malt flavor. Didn’t know what to expect, and was quite pleased with the results

Sampled at a 2005 Christmas and Winter beer tasting at Delilah’s, Chicago, IL. 2003 vintage. Clear brown ale having a small diminishing white head. No discernable carbonation. Good sweet malt aroma. Thin-to-medium body that starts with a spicy, chocolate, light toasty malt candy flavor, similar to chocolate-coated malt candy balls that I used to eat as a kid. Finishes dry with light malt aftertaste. Though I found this beer to be somewhat thin in texture, this is a good drinkable beer.

Bottle, 2004 vintage, from the Wild Oats store in Westmont, IL. Very nice hoppy, malty smell when poured. Kicks up a spongy foam head over a brown, slightly hazy body. Taste is a good Pacific interpretation of an English ale: bready and caramel malt character, but with a spicy hop load. hadn’t noticed when I got it last month that this is over a year old. It does show some signs of aging in the malt profile as I drink a bit further down. Can’t taste the alcohol, but its effect is very much there. It’s a great holiday beer all around.

The hops made this beer for me. Wasn’t expecting it due to aroma and color. A pleasant surprise.

This was an awesome Winter Warmer. The strong hops was the only flaw but a northwest beer will always have hops. The strong malt character and the floral flavors where awesome. Good strong brown color with a great head. I liked this beer and it was a great way to start the cold night.

Bottle. Pours a deeper brown color, clear, hints of ruby when backlit. Smallish off-white head forms and fades, good lacing is left behind. Aroma is nicely caramelish, sweetish with a touch of spices? Some floral/earthy hop presence in the nose. Medium bodied at best. Flavor just falls flat for me. Rather watery, malt just doesn’t cut it. More bitterness than anything dominates the flavor. A dull, earthy flavor of hops lingers for a bit in aftertaste. Rather unexciting.
