Commercial Description:
Mac Frost is a big, rich beer in the tradition of English strong ales. We begin with pale and Munich malt along with three varieties of caramel malt for gusto and big, creamy flavor. For balance we add Northern Brewer hops for bitterness and East Kent Goldings for aroma. We take it even further in the finish by dry-hopping Mac Frost with Oregon’s own Willamette hops and English Colthup Goldings. The result is tantalizing; a big beer that delivers with savory malts and complex, lingering hop spice on the tongue and in the nose. This beer will complement your holiday cheer like no other.

Bottled. Clear dark ruby. Aroma of raisins, plums and crystal malt. Medium dry with the clean, hard mouthfeel that I associate with crystal malt. Somewhat fruity with plenty of spicy hops. I don’t know why so many American brewers insist on brewing beers with such inhospitably hard mouthfeel?

2004 bottle courtesy of Larry Pitonka: Pours a transparent deep, dark mahogany with a thin, lightly lacing tan head. Lots of sweet caramel malt and some bock character in the aroma. Body has lots of western hop presence, which isn’t quite to style, but still tastes good. Dry, earthy caramel and a touch of sweet wheat are also evident. Has a touch too much biting carbonation. Hints of subtle diacetyl in the sticky, dry finish. I wouldn’t really call this a weizenbock, but it’s an ok winter warmer.

Very nice, sparkling clear, ruby/copper ale. Very small, creamy, off-white head. The nose is of alcohol and cocoa. Well-balanced flavor. Decently-bittered with some toffee, alcohol and chocolate notes. Medium-bodied with a dry mouthfeel. Crisp, clean, dry finish. Good brew!
