Milder and maltier with some sourness and sweetness. Kudos to this brewery, which I truly respect, for pulling off a difficult and rarely-imitated style. Slightly sour and very nice! wilkie (1191), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 30, 2003 Malty nose, spicey aroma. Flavor is smooth with a hoppy finish. Nice lacing. Red/brown appearance--slightly foamy with a little retention. Hopt flavor and bitterness well balanced nicely with malt flavor. a10555 (125), West Chester, Ohio, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 16, 2002 The first few bottles I tried when this hit the shelves were a little green, with out enough weiss beer flavor characteristics, but even a few short weeks have done wonders for the flavor of this beer...clove and bannana notes intermingle with a nice spicy palate with slight alcohol, a little more kick than, say, Spaten dunkel weiss but not nearly as big big as Aventinus. Nice beer, one of my favorite NW winter warmers so far, and pretty gutsy for Portland brewing to try making this style...(which, by the way, is dunkel weiss bock, not merely "ale"). Great scent to the beer spice and caramel malts..fresh.
Good taste also..starts with fresh malty sweetness followed by lemony citrus flavour,,and a spruce like briskness..bitter hop finish.
pretty good on the palate not too heavy.
I liked this beer a lot..had it last year..this is better..good attempt at a rare style. alcoholica (128), Dublin, Ohio, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 6, 2002 This is one of the truly great "winter warmers" and unquestioningly one of the most unique for the season. Maf Frost starts alluringly enough with an orange maroon appearance, moderated carbonation and a bilayered head of bubbles and cream. The aroma was pregnant with wheat and spruce--the flavor, which was accentuated by the alcohol presence, was wheaty and woody--tasting similarly too chimay bleu--but without the considerable yeasty effervescnece. The spruciness prickles the tongue to titillation and the palate is propitiated--though the last too sips seem a bit sweeter than ideal. This is an exquisite seasonal selection--though excellent for any season. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA

Possibly Christmas candy also. Looks like iced tea, not much head at all. Flavor is quite nice, a bit spicy with definite lemony hints. Malty. A bit thin, could use a bit more carbonation, but still manages to be nicely creamy. Enjoyable, though it’s a bit spicier than I’d expect a typical weizenbock to be.
