The oak aging has a definite effect on the hops, (which are nothing special in this brew to begin with) taking the bite out of the bitterness and leaving a smoother flavor. Elements of sweet malt and fruit can be found as well. The finish is an almost menthol minty-ness that numbs the palate. The oak-aging is interesting, but sort of counteracts the appeal of modern IPAs. I would have preferred more flavor rather than imparting smoothness and the weird, numbing mint. Light peach in color. Rich, dry, woody and earthy aroma with hints of peach, tangerine, caramel and hops. The earthy, woody and dry character mixes well with the substancial hop addiction. Pretty tasty. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 20, 2005 Bottle: pours orange with an off white medium head. Nice aroma of hops and citrus. Body is quite thin. Burning carbonation on first taste. Mild hop flavor compared to lots of IPA’s followed by a light malt sweetness. Finishes mildly bitter and a little lacking. Decent though. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 20, 2005 Golden amber under a medium white head which hung around a while with decent lacing. More malt in the aroma than hops and some pine forrest too. Nice balanced flavor of hops (somewhat restrained) malt, apples & pear. I didn’t pick up any oak but there was a sense of "space" between the flavors which is hard to put my finger on but which I found very appealing. Clean finish with a little bitterness and spice. Overall, a good IPA but not really a Hophead pleaser. unclebleen (620), California, USA
