The West 12 is a great trappist-style beer. It has a malty aroma and a dark brown color. It has a strong "belgian" flavor (and a potent kick), but it is slightly sweet. The aroma and taste improves as the beer warms up in the glass. This beer is not for everyone, but if you like strong belgian ales, the West 12 is a "must try". hopscotch (4755), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Sep 18, 2008 Updated: Sep 30, 2008Bottle... Post RBSG ’08 O-Town/Vero Beach Throwdown Chapter 8... This beer rocks!... Pitch black with a small, creamy, off-white head. The aroma is a euphoric swirl of chocolate and black cherries with a subtle dose of lactic acid. Full-bodied and velvety with expired carbonation. Sweet, lightly acidic flavor. Malty, mildly sweet finish. Kudos to mcbackus for sharing the goods! BlackForestCO (652), Fort Collins and Black Forest, Colorado, USA Aug 23, 2008 Bottle thanks to miketd, thanks Mike! Poured a deep dark brown color with beautiful garnet highlights and a moderate beige head that faded to a ring. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, brown sugar, fig, plum, and light yeast. Lightly sweet, fruity entry leads into a nice malty, brown sugar flavor with sweet undertones of plum, fig, dark grapes, and finishes with a nice caramel-rum sweetness. Smooth and full on the palate. Truly a delightful beer, thanks again Mike. Crosling (1730), Loveland, Colorado, USA Aug 21, 2008 It’s a brightly colored, burgundy brew with a well lasting and thinly layered head of foam. Nose of rum soaked icing covered fruit cakes, raisins and dried cherries. Flavor has a lot of depth and is very impressive. Notes of cherries, caramel, nuts, toffee and raisins. Full flavored from the start till the finish, which lasts well. Nice mouth feel. Really authentic. Wow, shockingly good beer and possible one of the best American Belgian Strong Darks out there. Oakes (7047), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 22, 2008 Slightly hazy burgundy colour. Sweet plum, orange, and demerara nose. Banana, spice, lots of chocolate and brown sugar with a dry, hoppy finish. Rich and sweet but well-balanced.
