Commercial Description:
Commercial Description: Part of our limited release high gravity series celebrating our twentieth anniversary (1989 to 2009) Double Dread Imperial Red (An American Strong Ale) is a high gravity red ale brewed with Two-Row Pale Malt, complimented by Aromatic and Wheat malts and a blend of CaraMunich, Carastan and Crystal malts for color, complexity and flavor. Fermented with our signature ale yeast, this hop bomb of a red ale is bittered with Colombus and Cascade hops, flavor and aromatics are enhanced by Cascade, Chinook and Amarillo, then generously dry-hopped with a tri-fecta of Cascade, Amarillo and Chinook for zesty citrus aromatics and a resinous flavor explosion. For those who chose to indulge their courtly passions be forwarned that this royal ruby refreshment ferments out at 8.6% a.b.v and nears triple digit IBU’s

Nose is sweet and malty. Dark fruit, caramel and toffee as well as some pine and peppery/floral hop notes. Pours dark reddish amber with a thin head. Sweet and malty up front. Caramel, toffee, fruity sweetness. Bitter earthy and piney hops in the finish.

Thanks Hayduke! This beer pours a dark murky brown with a nice thick head that is light tan. Good retention. Aroma is funk and yeast. Flavor is big and biting. This is a well hopped beer offering tart citrus fruit, pine, and caramel. It also has a sweet side that shows up more with warmer temperature. There is plenty of fruit and earthiness to go around. Funkiness to match. A fine beer that kept my taste buds on their toes.

Pours a deep hazy orange amber with a medium deeper off white bubbly/creamy head. Aroma of rich caramel and toasted malt, nuts, floral, citrus and lightly piney hops. Flavor of caramel, toffee, pine resin, grapefruit and oranges. Nice hoppy amber.

Bottle. Pours a clear rusty red with a thin off-white head. Aroma is full of caramel notes from the malts. Flavor is full of a lighter caramel flavor with a nice alcohol bit and a slight bit of piney hops. Alcohol bite at the end a bit strong.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy deep copper color with a large fluffy beige head (some larger floaties were present). The aroma was moderately sweet with caramel and buttery toffee dominating. Some subtle hints of citrus round out the nose. The flavor is caramel malt and some citrus up front, but is more earthy and bitter in the finish. The bitterness lingers on the palate for some time. Somewhat dry at the end. I think this is only slightly better than the RB average, perhaps another look at a later date. Rating # 50 for this beer.

Bottle sampled on 7/26/09: Pours a transparent dark copper amber with a stringy-lacing light beige head. Aroma of grainy sweet dark caramel malts and a touch of grassy citrusy hops. Starts with good fullness and light caramely sweetness with a touch of grapefruity hops before a toasty bittersweet finish. An ok imperial red but could use a little more complexity and hop character.

Hazy amber color. Caramel aroma, sweet, malty and a bit yeasty; lightly grassy too. Medium body; caramel aroma, leaning to the dry side, not very interesting; but the hopping is a bit fruity and improves the flavor; the final shows some toffee and light residual sweetness. Good, but not impressive.

Pours up deep slightly murky amber with full tan head and spotty lacing. The aroma is rich malts and crushed nuttiness to go along with a thin ring of pine, grassy and spicy hops. The taste brings in spicy and pine hops along the edges of the tongue and at the same time sweet malts, tasty nuttiness and Stone Arrogant Bastard like crystal malts across the middle. Actually it taste similar to ABA only a bit less chewy and bold. Toward midway the hops build in modest bitterness as a dash of earthiness joins in and takes the experience into the finish.
