Aug 27, 2009 A considerable rye character in this one, certainly bitter (piny/citrusy) as one would expect the style to be. This one had some floaties so maybe needs a fresh re-try.

Aug 21, 2009 Pours reddish bronze with a soapy tan head. The aroma has very toasted malt, lots of sweetness, biscuit doughiness and dark toffee. Medium / full body with a stickiness and semi-soft carbonation. The flavor starts with everything on the aroma along with some very earthy hops. The finish is astringent and oxidized. There is no date on the bottle, so this could have been due to age. If I get a known fresh bottle this will be re-rated.

Aug 19, 2009 Very disappointed by this beer. First off, the appearance was unacceptable. Far too much particulate and much more brown than red coloring. Has a good creaminess and decent body. It most definitely doesn’t taste like triple digit IBU (don’t think you can get that much IBU with 8.6% alcohol anyways). Would like to see it filtered better and with different hop character.

Aroma: Hoppy for sure, some caramel malts, earthy, woody, citrus fruits
Appearance: Cloudy, dark amber-brownish color, about 1 finger of creamy tan head, lots of sheet lacing
Flavor: Nice hoppy bitterness with a nice malty sweetness too, but the hops are dominant for sure
Palate: Really smooth mouthfeel, oily, medium body
Overall Impression:
I tend to find that I like these hoppy reds more then most others do. This is another one that fits that category. I’m going to be a good bit over the average again, this one was really good. A really nice looking beer in the glass, and big hoppy character that I found quite enjoyable. Cool label too for the record. By the way, it’s a little unusual that I’m the 30th rater of a beer from California.

Aug 15, 2009 Pour is a dark red with a small white head. Aroma is all things oliy hops. Reminds me of some Rouge beers. Flavor is some caramel and molasses with a bitter hops bite. The only knock against the beer is that none of the many flavors really stand out and dominate. Still there is lots to like about this one as its another over the top american stong ale with plenty going on in the bottle.

Aug 13, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy almost murky deep woody amber with a thin head- somewhat lasting and some slight lace. Aroma is green grassy hops, light mint, some pine and citrus- menthol hints, orange soapiness, and sharp caramel malts. Flavor is piny hop resins, orange oil, more mint, earth and grass, toffee, molasses and sharp dark crystal malts. Finish is a bit resinous and tacky with hops and a slight almost astringency as it thins out a bit - sharp piny bitterness in the back of the throat.

Aug 9, 2009 Bottle from Friar Tuck in Savoy, IL. Pours a very dark amber to brown with a light beige retentive head. Aroma if fruity, minty, and herbal like many Pacific NW brews. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Malt profile is caramel and diluted molasses countered by sharp grapefruit rind bitterness that carries through to the finish. Finish is very dry, peppery, and somewhat hot with some accents of dried herb. Not bad.

Aug 7, 2009 Smell is sweet, fruity and volatile. Pour is rather viscous for a beer. Brown haze with no sediment. nice thin head. Greasy oily soapy nasty hop bitter syrup on palate. .If this was a double IPA I would say it was on style. Finsih is rather rude. Barely any carbonation. A little buzzy near the end of the bottle. Nast nasty green grapefruit rind squeeezy lasting bitter finish, wew. If you are into IPA or IIPA, try this.
