Sweet caramel and resin aromas. Sweet and full with syrupy caramel and nuts with a lasting grapefruit and pine hop finish.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 27, 2009 Bottle:   Deep reddish caramel, large foamy sand colored head, a few rings of lacing.   Rich malty nose, underlying hop bite and alcohol.   Certainly smells like a Red (Hoppy Amber).   Thick malty start, good hop bite, also a bitterness that I attribute to malts.   Not at all that sweet, a little acidic.   Yeah, would be nicer if it had any amount of sweetness.   A little dry, puckering.   A little grainy and astringent.   Could be a bit smoother.   Decent body, fairly heavy mouthfeel.   Seems fairly hefty, as I would have expected, but needs a bit more sweetness.   A little rough on the backside.

Pours out in a clear deep reddish amber colopur with a small yet lasting off-white head. Rich rounded and resinous aroma of caramel, licorice, red berries, flowers and red grapefruit. Nearly full-bodied with notes of berries, resin, mild pepper, caramel and lemon-zest. Long bitter finish of grapefruit, resin, grapefruit and grass with rounded sweetish undertones of peaches and fudge. Well done! WabashMan (817), Noblesville, Indiana, USA

This one nicely combines hops and alcohol notes with some nice, malty caramel flavors as well. beernovice39 (307), South Carolina, USA

Poured hazy reddish brown color with a large frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toaste3d malt, nuts, earthy aroma. Moderate to heavy slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy biitersweet flavor to medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration.
My expectations where met with a good complex beer.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 16, 2009 Bottle... Poured a hazy, deep, amberish/ruby with tons of floating sediment and a thick, off-white head. Aroma esters, brown sugars, sweet & floral hops, and some grains. Came off boozier than the 8.6%. Like a mild American barleywine. Thick palate, that coated the mouth nicely. A little bit of hops that balanced the rich, malty and caramel flavors. Citrusy and peppery with a spiced, malt finish. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 15, 2009 Bottle. Deep muddy reddish-brown with a decent head. The aroma is crammed full of promise -- a big caramel monster. Into the breach I dive and do indeed end up the recipient of a gigantic caramel-malt brew, laced with a toasty edge. American brewers have taken to applying the "Imperial" tag to just about anything -- for once, this deserves it. (#3741, 11/15/2009) bvc (347), Kenmore, Washington, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 10, 2009 12oz twist off bottle. Pours a deep, slightly murky, dark amber brown with a light white head. Nose is big on sweet bread malt, caramel, hints of pine and earthiness and a touch of soap. Some sharper bitterness up front then into sweet caramel malt finishing with a good amount of bitter pine on the end. Fairly earthy throughout and really out of balance.
