12 ounce stubby bottle purchased from Monument Wines in Concord, CA. 2006 vintage. Very faint aroma that has some light tobacco notes, a little sweet caramel notes, but this is relatively difficult to smell. Moderately transparent dark amber body with a medium yellow-tan head that is relatively quickly dissipating. Virtually no head. Quite sweet, sugary, to start. Becomes grainy, roasted, and earthy in the middle. Some ethanol follows later. Finishes with some weird, rubbery, burnt tobacco flavors. Plenty of burnt roastiness. I don’t know. This is a pretty sweet, straightforward barleywine that lacks complexity and hops.

Tap... hazy, brownish/red with a big head. Sweet hoppy aroma. Excelent flavor balance of hops, malts and sweetness. Other flavors of citrus fruits and spices.

Vintage 2005: A nice showing, pouring a murky orange-brown color, nice thin off-white head (fit perfectly in my tulip glass), solid lacing. The aroma was caramel, spices, some rum. The flavor was caramel, spices, rum, cherries, herbs, some light bitter chocolate or coffee in the background, and a finish that was resinous hoppy. Alcohol was smooth, hardly noticeable beneath all the sweet malts and hoppy finish. Mouthfeel was very full, smooth, a little sticky. Amply carbonated, easy to regenerate the head with a swirl or two, renew the aroma. Hops balanced out the malt backbone quite nicely. (Hey, any beer that causes me to kick in Traffic’s Barleycorn album is fine by me!)

Bottle 2006. Deep brown color with a huge ivory colored head and some tan floaties. Malty aroma with some piney, perfume notes. Nice thick mouth feel with a sweet malty flavor. A bit of chocoalte and some dark fruits. VERY bitter and a bit hot. Fruity/ bitter finish. I’ll have to re-rate this one after it gets some age on it.

(2005) Big brown head on top of a chocolate colored opaque liquid. Aroma is hoppy and sweetly effervescent (like sprite). Flavor is unexpectedly bitter, and hoppy.Tastes like it was brewed with many pounds of lime peels.$4/12oz

2005: Sweet roasty malt aroma with some dark fruit. Dark reddish brown color with a light tan head. Starts with some citrus, followed by red stone fruit, some sweet fruit, then lightly roasted malt. Then even a bit of smoky malt. Not a huge hop component. Refreshingly heavy. Thick mouthfeel.
