2005: Sweet roasty malt aroma with some dark fruit. Dark reddish brown color with a light tan head. Starts with some citrus, followed by red stone fruit, some sweet fruit, then lightly roasted malt. Then even a bit of smoky malt. Not a huge hop component. Refreshingly heavy. Thick mouthfeel.

2005 vintage -- Very nice brown-red body with a minimal white lacing head. Sweet aroma, honey, barley, some caramel. Sweet initial flavor, grows hoppy and then slightly grassy. Sweet and warm ending.

Pours a cloudy ruby under a light khaki head. The aroma is a little on the minty side. The flavor is candied malts (but not cloyingly sweet) a lighter than expected hop backup and a bit of heat from the alcohol.

12 oz bottle, 2005 vintage. Murky ruby with a thick, foamy, light tan head. Dark fruit nose, earthy, sweet thick malt, herbal hops, spicy orange. Thick, foamy veil of lace. Flavor has quite a bitter hop bite at first, somewhat bitter orange. The flavor mellows and seems to get sweeter as it warms, with caramely sweetness coming through. Spice notes are in the flavor, but really come through in the finish, as does the warming alcohol. I drank this because I saw other reviews that said it may not age gracefully, but one year only took a bit of the edge off from what I can tell. Still, overall, a pretty solid barley wine.

Poured with a great foamy, frothy tan head that yield some runny lace. Unfortunately, I ate some radishes before hand and my mouth is a little confused from that. I do taste some great hop that dominates and yet compliments the caramely malt. Distinct barley wine hop nose. Drank it in a goblet that’s narrow on bottom so beer is translucent there and wide on the top where the beer is almost opaque. Strange effect, good beer!

Thanks to Ross for this one. This one looks like a smacked ass, which is what a good barleywine should look like...muddy dark brown in color with 1-finger splotchy khaki head. The aroma is very fruity, oaky, peaty, woth some hops, caramel malt, and feety cheese hints. The flavor is richly caramel malty, very fruity, figgy, with a big oaky bourbon, cabernet, cognac, and citric finish. Nice complexity and balance.
