Commercial Description:
Part of our limited release high gravity series celebrating our twentieth anniversary (1989 to 2009)
Serious Madness Black Ale (An American Strong Ale) is a high gravity black beer built on a foundation of our house Two-Row Pale Malt augmented with North American Specialty Malts & German Carafa, fermented with our signature ale yeast.
This black ale is bittered with Magnum hops, flavor and aromatics are enhanced by Hallertau and Tettnanger with Willamette hops utilized for added aroma in the hop back.
This beer is inky black with amber edges, light bodied, silky smooth, complex and delicious...
Not for the meek and timid this beer ferments out at a gratifying 8.6% ABV and 74.7 IBU’s. Best served at 45 degrees in a snifter.

chocolate, roasty, dough, licorice, black, aminimal head, light sweetness, medium body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish. A strong, deep roast beer with some meaty, doughy yeast factors. It’s enjoyable and with character.

bottle - Pours near black with a thin light tan head that leaves some lacing. There’s a roast malt aroma with some chocolate. The flavor is much the same. It’s medium bodied with a bubbly mouthfeel. Alcohol taste is minimal. It’s decent, but didn’t overly impress me.

Bottle. Dark mahogony beer with a tan head. Malt and chocolate aroma. Chocolate flavor with light roast and some spiciness. Medium-plus bodied. Light roast/coffee lingers with chocolate and spice.

Bottle. Mocha-like Porter notes. Pitchy pour with tiny-bubbled, frothy beige head. Taste is mostly dry with caramel and very faint hops and the slightest hint of roast. Inky creaminess with deep, dark waves of chocolate. Medium-fullish body with a long finish. Alcohol pretty well disguised. An aptly named Black Beer - kommt grad vom Tintenfass.

Malty aroma with a touch of alcohol. Pours very dark with a thin, short lasting head. Its not got the deepest flavor for the percent, and the hops are noticeable but do not overpower the malt with lingering sweetness. Its not very alcoholic tasting for the percent as some beers can be. Has a low level of carbonation.

Single bottle purchased at Friendly Mini Mart in Lakewood. Odd thing that it made it all the way to Lakewood with only 32 ratings on the way. The aroma of this is a rather nice roasted malt with a little bit of sweetness. The flavor is rather simple for an American strong ale, not the shabbiest of malt flavor but rather thin, like a cheap cup of coffee or a soda. That does lend to this being very drinkable, it would make a good session brew.

12oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. Pours a deep coffee brown with a small beige head. Nose is coffee, toasted malts, bitter chocolate, and light hops. Flavor malty, chocolaty, light coffee and a hint of booze. Not bad.
