Roasty, fudgey nose with a stinging burnt overtone. Thick, slightly fudgey and milky body. Simple milk chocolate and fudge character. Easy-going quaffing stout but with more body that suits the role. 5000 (2540), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 9, 2007 Bottle: Black in color, nearly opaque, large frothy fawn colored head, spotty lacing.   Big chalky cocoa powder nose, some
chocolate malt.   Malts seem slighty roasted.   Low hop profile.   Mild lactose like sweetness on the tongue.   Hop aspect
is quite soft.   Mainly chocolate malt with a small slice of roasted malts.   Solid everyday Stout in my opinion.   Glad its not
overly hoppy to be honest.   This is a malt oriented Stout, just how I like them.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.
Could stand to be a tad thicker, but as is it’s fairly robust.   Nothing out of the ordinary, but as a Stout its a solid example.
Glad to say this one wasn’t overly hopped up but instead it stayed on the maltier side.   Recommended.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 4, 2007 Bottle. Cocoa malt and pepper aroma. Thick dark black color with big brown head. Cola, cocoa malt and white pepper flavor - moderate carbonation. Nice full body. A very nice straight stout. Beerlando (2344), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 2, 2007 Thick, opaque, black body that is almost completely void of even the darkest brown highlights. This sucker is BLACK. A small, coffee colored head settles pretty quickly to a thin film with a prominent, bubbly edge. The aroma is rich, roasty, and creamy. Melted dark chocolate malts meld with freshly ground coffee beans, molasses, cream, and a touch of piney hops. The flavor is intensely roasty up front, with bakers chocolate and coffee assaulting the tongue. Cream smoothes things out considerably at the mid-point, finishing slightly dry and hoppy. Medium-full bodied and incredibly smooth and very well balanced. This is a damn good beer. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 26, 2007 Black with dark tan head. Nice powered cocoa aroma, a little lacto, a little roast. A little light on the body. Taste starts with a mild milky sweetness and dark chocolate/roastiness, with the finish having a bit of hop presence. Pretty good brew, the best of the Mad River bottles I’ve tried. natejgood (190), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 25, 2007 Pours a dark chocolate color, almost black, with very little head. The beer smells of malt, molasses, and alcohol. The mixture of sweet molasses and alcohol isn’t particularly exciting to me. Thankfully the taste of alcohol is much weaker than the smell, so the beer is actually pretty good. It is a bit sweet with coffee, chocolate and roasty malts in the background. There is barely any carbination in the beer. It doesn’t have quite as much body as I would like, but other than that and the aroma I think this is a pretty good beer. malrubius (1002), Valley Stream, New York, USA

Very fruity flavor, like roasted dark chocolate Raisinettes with lingering fruity bitterness. Medium-full body, medium carbonation. Perhaps not entirely fresh. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 16, 2007 12 oz bottle, via fordest. Pours an inky black body, 100% opaque under a small covering of fizzy dark brown head. The nose is a nice mix of dark chocolate and roast with some light coffee and milk chocolate. A little light hoppiness. The flavor is dry and roasty with a slight chalkiness on the lightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a fairly silky texture and nice soft carbonation that only comes from bottle conditioning. Overall a very solid stout. Surprised I liked it so much really.
