Steelhead Scotch Porter is a unique twist on a tradional style. Balanced with dark roasted barley and crystal malts, with the perfect blend of peated malt for a subtle smokey flavor.

Okay, I’m not changing my numbers, because they’re not bad, but I’m changing this because I think the beer itself has been changed. I definitely don’t remember the smokiness being as prominent (which was why I previously lambasted it for unbalanced malt sweetness). I am much happier with it this time around (although I did give it good numbers previously). I’d love this as a chaser to a 12-year or older single malt scotch.

Pours coke brown, small tan head. No chocolate in this one. Roasted carbon-y nose. Roasty/toffee slight sweet malt going down. Pretty balanced with the hops. Overall not bad, definetely more malty than the typical porter.

Bottle from Total Wine in Roseville, CA. Poured a dark brown almost black with almost no head. Tasted of sweet malt flavors like carmel and toffee. Just a hint of bitter. Another winner from Mad River Brewing.

Bottle from Total Wine in Roseville, CA. I didn’t get the smokey flavor so much as I tasted the sweet malts which kicked up this porter. Excellently drinkable and smooth to match with subtle coffee, toffee, chocolate hints.

Pours dark ruby/amber. Light brownish head. Aroma has roasted matls and chocolate. Taste is filled with sweet matls and light chocolate / caramel, toffee. There a light presence of hops and a tiny bitter note. Also taste grains, possibly barley. I was surprised that it was only a 6.4% beer, one could swear it was more. Bottle also poured some sedimentary yeast. I am liking this one.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a light tan head. Aroma of strong roasted malt, caramel, nuts, raisins, toffee, currants, smoke and a tiny bit of figs - very nice! Medium-bodied; Strong sweet flavour shows caramel and toffee way up front with a bit of roasted malt, oatmeal and coffee behind. Aftertaste still has more sugars than anything else, although the alcohol is definitely noticeable then. Overall, a really good scotch, definitely showing roasty flavours, smoke and tons of sugars nicely! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Kybecca in Fredericksburg, Virginia on 31-May-2008, drunk on 08-July-2008.

A rich sweet smoky roasty aroma. This is nice as well. A bit of hops but very drinkable. Not too sweet and a little smoky. Good stuff.
