Sep 24, 2007 Bottle. Poured almost black with medium frothy tan head. Malty aroma. Bitter coffee and sweet malt (mostly) flavour. Medium body and mouth feel. malty finish with a bit of smoke. A good porter.

Sep 18, 2007 Bottle at Brickskeller in Washington, DC. Pours midnight brown with a nice tan head. Caramelly nut aroma with hint of roast. Medium to light bodied with an unpleasant fizzy texture. Messy flavors of caramel, nuts, coffee, and bittering hops. Finish gets even worse. I could not decide if it was a flaw (DMS , diacetyl, etc.) or just off. I did not like this one.

Sep 16, 2007 12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Dark brown/black with nice tan head. Chocolate coffee bread earth aroma. Mild chocolately flavor with some fruity, raisiny smokiness and bitterness. Medium body and medium carbonation. Pretty tasty but less complex and flavorful than I remembered. Still, definitely a good beer that I won’t mid having again.

Sep 11, 2007 Pours near black with dark brown hues and a fully receding tan head. Aroma of roasted barley, coffee, peat malt, and higher alcohols. Taste is dark chocolate, sweet maltiness, pepper, and flaked barley. Mouthfeel is full bodied with soft carbonation. This one is unfiltered, so be sure to decant, unless you like drinking the floaties. Very enjoyable.

Sep 7, 2007 The scotch flavor didn’t come through nearly as much as I had expected. However, the blend of hops and other flavors is pretty nice - I would drink again.

Sep 7, 2007 nice black with dark brown edges. disappearing tan head. aroma smoked molasses and chocolate with hints of raisins. very nice. sweet molasses chocolate flavor with some tart raisin bitter coffee and a hint of smoke and a spicy backbone. finish tart raisin spicy black pepper smoke with a hint of sweet chocolate molasses and some bitter coffee. medium body. moderate carbonation. very nice. this one surprised me. more complex than i expected. i will be buying this one again.

Sep 3, 2007 12-ounce. Pours opaque dark brown with a towering, moussy, pocked tan head. Lightly sweet nose, maybe a little bit of vanilla there. Nowhere near the smoke impact I’d hope for if I’d read the description beforehand. Watery. Still. Earthy, leafy mid-palate, with some nut and caramel in there. None of these elements works well with the others, they all just vie for your attention and leave a processed filmy taste on the roof of your mouth. Bitter, CO2-ish finish.
