psuCE03 (115), York, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 11, 2007 Very dark brown/red color with little head from the pour. It has a good aroma of dark chocolate and coffee and tastes just as it smells. It could be a little thicker but it’s a good after dinner or dessert beer. Ambrose (141), East Aurora, New York, USA Apr 4, 2007 Good batch. Wanted to name it the big push. But they didnt go for it. They never go for it. I dont even know why I try.
had it in growler form once. was very liked and well treated. FlacoAlto (2251), Tucson, Arizona, USA Nov 29, 2006 Pours with a frothy, initially two-finger thick, light brown tan colored head that sits atop a beer that is simply black; though it shows a brilliantly clear, chocolate brown hue as I pour it into my glass. The aroma has a nice leading roasted malt character that actually has a touch of nuttiness to it. Aromatic notes reminiscent of lightly sweetened black coffee join a certain burnt grain husk character and even a bit of chalkiness. A touch of chocolate and the rich dark grain sweet maltiness add some roundness to the more dominant roasted notes. This definitely has a crisp burnt grain character that I would expect from a proper Schwarzbier.

The beer has a dry, burnt acidity to it up front, but this quickly moves to a soft dark malt sweetness, which ultimately is the more dominant note. The finish has a touch of drying character to it; this is mainly a combination of hop bitterness and a roasted, burnt acidity and bitterness. This has a fullness to it in the palate that is certainly contributed by the malt sweetness here. The malt sweetness is so well balanced by the roasted character that the beer is almost not sweet, yet definitely has a perception of malt sugars.

This beer is quite the nice tipple for this chilly night; not too thick (so it is quite quaffable), but it has enough meat to it to be chewy and engaging enough on this chilly night. I could certainly quaff a couple pints of this brew, before I know it my glass is empty. This is definitely my sort of Schwarzbier; chewy with lots of roast malt character. eaglefan538 (2141), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Dec 3, 2006 Poured a dark brown-black color, ruby-red hues when held to light. The head was stingy initially but had decent retention. Lacing was weak. The aroma was chocolate, coffee, some licorice. Flavor was chocolate, coffee, nice roast reinforcement, some licorice. Really a smooth mouthfeel after it warmed. Started this thing at about 40F, was way too thin and the flavors weren’t robust (in fact, I thought it was a bad porter at that point). Everything began to impress as it got to appropriate temperatures. In the end, nice stateside schwarzbier. Braudog (3464), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Nov 10, 2006 Poured pitch black with a thin tan head. Big java aroma. I’m with HighGravity, I’d almost put this in the stout or porter category in a blind panel. But indeed the Magic Hat website says "black lager" and it is indeed lagered. Wow! Anyway, it drinks with an almost sweet roastiness. Bit of bitter chocolate. This is damn good beer.
