DKlovesbeer (172), Sarasota, Florida, USA Dec 6, 2004 Big foamy yeast colored head dissipates quickly leaving a lot of widely dispersed lacing in the top inch of the glass. Body is a clear, pale shade of amber that reminds me of scotch. Aroma is a bit peculiar, hints of old gym socks, burnt plastic, malt, cherry, and some odd floral hops. Aroma could have some yeast and alcohol in it as well. Honestly, this beer is a lesson in olfactory confusion. Smell it once and you get whiffs of malt and fruit. Smell it again and you get whiffs of sanitized hospital floors. Weird! Flavor is underwhelming. Palate seems flat, bland, and lifeless. Beer is fizzy and has a bubbly mouthfeel. Flavors of toasted rice, malt, alcohol, fruit, yeast, rubber, and tree bark all combine to make one odd beer. Strangely enough I think I’ll try this one again. It’s an oddity, but definitely not heaven sent. maltdog (510), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Nov 30, 2004 Pours crystal clear honeyed amber with a transient off-white head and decent lacing. Aromas of toasty malt and Butterfinger, also hinting at golden raisins, candied sugar, and maple. Sweetish toasty malt flavor, mild peppery spice, impression of wet autumn leaves. I would swear there’s a spicy Belgian yeast element here. Feels like flannel on the tongue. Leaves my mouth and gums numb and tingly; feels like much more than 5%. Mellow grainy/fruity/spicy aftertaste. Overall zesty, but definitely not hoppy. Nicely balanced and equally suited to sipping or quaffing. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA Nov 25, 2004 Updated: Nov 27, 2004 Golden color, nice head Good aroma of hops. IPA< just say it. hoppy bittery, ok. I can taste something fruity, maybe orange. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 24, 2004 A hoppy pale ale, akin to an IPA. Carbonation on the aggressive tongue tingle side. Malty nominally satisfying aftertaste. British style. Bit of bitterness. Orange citrus and peach flavors from the hops. Drew (2406), Kent, Ohio, USA Nov 23, 2004 My 2nd "Fat" beer of the night - would’ve made an interesting black&tan with the Fat Dog Stout - I’d call it "Fat-Fat". Shiny copper orange, smallish head, but good lacing. Citrus floral hop aroma - enticing. Body is medium and smooth. Some sweet malts embraced by citrus orange peel and summer fruits. Increasingly reminds me of orange juice as I drain the glass. Another bottle from Trenton, NJ. notalush (2628), Denver, Colorado, USA Nov 13, 2004 Bright copper pour, with impressive lacework - light but inviting aroma of citrus, mild hops and a hint of caramel - flavor is unspectacular but well-balanced - light hops up front, followed by some biscuity malts, which then lead to a slight bitter apricot flavor - medium-dry finish doesn’t leave much behind for you to remember the beer by - much better than I remember it being (I tried it once before I began rating beer), but I think I’ll pass on this in the future. "Expand your View with Things that are New", the cap tells me. Do they have the Cat in the Hat writing these things? Well, this beer is new to me, so I’ll expand away...though I must say I was baffled and prepared for a let-down with the phrase, "a paler shade of pale." I’ve given up trying to make sense of this brewery’s design and verbiage (this beer’s name, the flying pig of the label), and surrendered to my sense of the surreal.
Appearance: hazy, pale apricottish color, with a sturdy collar of white foam.
Aroma: fresh and fruity, apricot, peach, a whiff of citrus, a mess of hops.
Taste: hops come first, a big, bold, buzzing bracket of them, blitzing the tongue and clinging to the palate. Those same fruity flavors recurr, also, ably matched with tasty malt. Hops never quit...body is medium, texture quit nice, ...finish is adequate, just so, quick and dry.
All in all, if I were a New Englander, I’d be quite satisfied if this was a barroom staple like SNPA is..nice session brew.
DrunkAsASkunk (847), Lynnwood, Washington, USA Nov 10, 2004 Oh the wonderful joys of boring beer....This beer pours a red and copper color with a foamy white head which soaped out really quickly and left little lacing. The aroma is hard to find with grains, malt, a hint of pine and slight fruity esters being present. The carbonation is light and tingling. Flavor-wise its heavily grainy and grassy with a thin dry cardboardy finish. Unappealing finish, leaning neither way in terms of being bad or good. Very thin body, light and sweet...absolutely little in the way or surprise or taste here aside from a slight malty fruity body and light sweet and dry finish. Boooorrrrriiiinnngggg. Palateable if I’m thirsty but nothing more than a light session beer.
