Mild aroma, a bit of spice, brown sugar. Flavor is malty, earthy, with some caramel, brown sugar and lacking smoke. Medium bodied, fairly easy drinking for having moderate strength. Somewhat enjoyable but leave it to Magic Hat to make a smoked beer with no smoke flavor. rudolf (1774), Buffalo, New York, USA

Clear, very dark brownish-red with a nice, white blanket that clings to the sides of the glass. Toasty dark malt aroma with a subtle smokiness surrounded by tart fruit notes. Sweet smoke with none of the expected dark malt bitterness, though some late toast character. A little sourness from fruity esters that compliment the dark malt/smokiness fairly well. The problem with this beer is its residual sweetness--there is no bitterness to balance it. Full body and stick with moderate carbonation. Kinz (2207), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 18, 2005 Shockoe Brew Fest. Copperish red, roaasty aroma. Cookie and biscuit malts, some hop bitterness on the finish, but not hop oriented at all OK, but not quite hitting it either. jefcon (1000), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 18, 2005 Walnut red with a tan half-inch head. Aromas are clean, and a little sweet brown sugar/clove/honey to go along with the light out-of-doors smoke on the malt. Delicate aromas are balanced by a more aggressive beer on the palate. Aggressive but thin. Sweet finish is less of spice or fruit and more of candy sugar. dolemike1 (1129), Jeannette, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 16, 2005 Lightly hazed otherwise clear brown ale with a nice moka head. Sweet malt smeel with notes of apples, and light peat. Some wet dog too. In mouth, the smokeyness comes out, like a fine scotttish malt whiskey, the ,alt is too overly sweet, and a nice little hops in finale. Lighter bodied but very good. Bought at CJs in Potsdam NY, fall 2004. weeare138 (936), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 16, 2005 Appears a deep mahogany brownish red with a nice sticky 3 finger tan head that has nice retention. Settles to a decent ivory collar and leaves clumpy lacing around the glass.
Smell is of some smoked peat and bourbon like sweetness minus the alcohol...and now that I read the description from the web site, it claims to have peat smoked whiskey malt. Hehe, not a bad guess.
Taste is of a nice blend of the bourbon and smoked peat with some other semi-sweet malts coming through with a mild hop punch and a slight rye taste to spice things up.
Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth, sweet, and semi dry with a rye taste that lingers and makes you lick your lips. Nice!
Drinkability is good. Hides the 6.9% very well. If you’re a bourbon fan, and a beer lover, I suggest checking this one out. It’s a nice mix that wages an unusual battle on the palate.
