Commercial Description:
A tartfully zesty take on its long forgotten original namesake, it’s a deeply acidic medium bodied beverage with a rich malt taste and a slight hint of hops. At the center of every sip lies its secret: refreshingly cool notes of grapefruit derived from both whole fruit and freshly zested rind added to the boil. The result is a deliciously puckered beverage of sublimely sourful appeal guaranteed to provide instantaneous relief from summer heat waves of every kind.

Bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a thin white head. Aroma was yeasty with pale malts, light honey and slight citrus. Flavor was lightly sweet with wheat, clove, yeast and has a hint of banana.

I am not a sour fan but I liked this one better than most. Had some on tap at the Magic Hat brewery. Fruity, zesty nose. Flavor is sour with slight malt notes. Very crisp. Not bad.

(draft, as American Sour Ale) Creamy medium beige head atop lightly hazed amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, butterscotch, some cherry/sour. Taste is moderately sweet, sour cherry, butterscotch, light floral. Light-medium body, light acidity. Almost as if they got an infected batch and decided to market it.

On tap at the Beechtree. Was listed as “Magic Hat Farm House Sour Ale”. ‘Farm house sour ale’ got me all excited, but I had to reign myself in since it was preceded by the words “magic hat”. Seems my restraint was a good thing, as this turned out to be less than stellar. Pours a clear yellow with a medium white head that fades quickly. No real funk, but there is almost a hint of hay and maybe some citrus. Medium bodied and with a flavor of grain that comes through. Barely sour, though there is a lot of lively sharp carbonation. Finishes with a light tart citric acid flavor with some lemony flavors. Tartness is not so much sour as it is reminiscent of a granny smith apple, but without the sweetness. Bit of a grain aftertaste.

Bottle: poured a light golden brown color with a quickly disipating white head. Scents of wheat and citrus. Just a beer you can have on a hot summer day.

A lightly hazed blonde ale with a thin white head. Light lactic aroma with not much character, Rather bland and lifeless ale, with a bit of cherries. Not impressed. On tap at Vermont Brewers Fest 2008, July 19, 2008.
