Commercial Description:
A beer to provoke political discussion.

A deliciously red, white, and brewed pre-Prohibition lager of the kind brought to the great American melting pot by 19th century German immigrants who adapted their ancient recipes to use those grains commonly found on these shores. Brewed with corn.

[From the Participation variety 12-pack, Welcome to Chicago Magic Hat, glad to see you here in Bottles] I entered the beer as a lager, but clearly its a Pilsner once I opened the bottle... Nice rich malty/bready aroma with fantastic noble hops. Pours a darker golden, hazy, with a nice frothy off-white head. First taste is super bitter and quite metallic tangy. Tons of hops in this Pilsner. Lightly sweet malt base with not much of the breadiness that is in the aroma. Nice crisp medium bodied beer. Vote damn it! This is actually quite good and the closest thing I’ve had to Victory Prima Pils.

Bottle. Poured like a semi-hazy full bodied american pale lager. Decent carbonation, pilsner looking. The aroma was bitter hops, resinous notes, grainy malts. The flavor followed the aroma, like an English Pale Ale, really (if I didn’t read that it was a lager), some adjuncts mixed in there with the earthy bitter hops, one of the most bitter-hopped "pale lagers" I’ve seen, shy of a pilsner grass level, though. Meh, it was ok, but I don’t get it, why bother with this style, MH? Craft brew or not. Well short of anything really pilsner-like, a fully flavored, top of the line pale lager, for whatever that’s worth!

Thanks 17thfloor! Pours a slightly hazy orange with a small off-white froth. Aroma is a blend of malts and hops. Some definite fruity citrusy hops provide a sharp aroma that is balanced by some caramel and light malts. Flavor starts out with a burst of lively citrus fruitiness but quickly picks up the hops which provide a sharp slightly piney bitterness that gains in strength through the finish. Finishes with a slight return of sweet malt and wheat in the aftertaste. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A decent lager that has a certain level of balance but doesnt bring any great complexity or character to the table. Not sure that itd get me out to vote. (I did vote)

Smells like a hoppy pale lager. Color of pale lager but a little hazey. Hey this says it’s a lager but it immediately comes across like an IPA or imperial pilsner, hweoooo. Disappointing IPA character, that is because I don’t like IPA. Any carbonation is covered by the green grapefruit rind bitterness. Dude! I probably should have got the message on the label because participation has IPA in the word. Lingering nasty IPA finish. On IPA style, bordering on DPA. PARTICIPATION S5L3T3F203

Bottle. This lager had the most amazing head I’ve ever seen. Very billowy and everlasting. Color was a golden amber and clear. Unfortunately, I didn’t get much out of the aroma, but the taste wasn’t bad. Kinda grainy and medium bodied. Pretty fun lager.

11.16.08 Pretty decent pils but not as good as the Victory I had just before. Good though, Magic Hat doesn’t disappoint.
