sfontain (500), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 22, 2004 22 oz. bomber. I sampled this at the brewery a few days ago, and it was better there. Nonetheless, this rating is for the bomber. Pours a wonderful almost-black garnet with a thick, creamy, light tan head. Aroma is very chocolatey and just plain smells creamy; I get lots of toffee and vanilla smell along with a little roastiness. Flavor is quite chocolatey; there is some coffee in there, but I like the fact that it is more subdued than in most other porters. Also a bit of caramel and a lot of vanilla. Nice, medium-long, bitter finish from the coffee flavor and hops. Slightly too thin. Probably my second favorite porter thus far, next to Anchor. Very good.
Underhook (141), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA Jun 27, 2008 Updated: Jun 29, 2008The first time I had this beer, I was still under 21. It’s been a while, but the taste is familiar. Pours a dark, burnt red. Excellent vanilla aroma that smells almost chocolately, as paradoxical as it sounds. Tastes very good, roasted, nutty vanilla... though a bit on the watery side which really drops its rating. Very good brew, could have been far better though. hellbilly (901), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Apr 15, 2008 2004 bottle brought out at BA tasting. a dark brown pour that is a bit hazy and topped with a thin tan head. aroma is fantastic... whole vanilla beans, malt powder, wood, a little chocolate and some bourbon-y caramel qualities which i believe to be oxidation. vanilla bean is all over the flavor... it’s combined with scalded cream, woodiness like a vanilla pod, chocolate/malt, a strange sour quality and an ashy smoky finish. the sourness comes through hard once it is noted and pretty much ruins the brew. light bodied with a watery mouth feel. i suppose this wasn’t so bad considering the abv% (4.8) and the fact that it is four years old... thanks dana. Mad_Indian (822), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 18, 2007 On draft at Capones, A really good chocolate aroma. Dark pour with serious vanilla, chocolate and very mild hop flavors. This was an odd but enjoyable brew. michael-pollack (1462), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 11, 2007 Draught: Aroma of vanilla, chocolate, cream, and roasted malts. Poured dark black with a medium-sized, very foamy, milk chocolate colored brown head that lasted throughout. Medium sweet flavor. Excellent lacing. Tastes of vanilla, cream, chocolate, licorice, and roasted malts. Medium body. Watery texture. Average carbonation. Sweet vanilla/roasted malt finish. A nice porter. Ty5592 (1009), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 30, 2007 Draft. Dark brown in color with no real head to speak of. Medium bodied. The aroma was of maple syrup, chocolate,a nd vanilla extract. The taste was the same. Thinner body. I wonder if this would be better if the vanilla taste was more authentic and not artificial.
