BeerEssential (91), Massachusetts, USA Mar 19, 2008 This beer is a nice, dark red with a decent head. As the drink goes on there’s some nice lacing. I didn’t really know what it meant when people described a beer as "grassy" but one sniff of this and I learned fast. Really fresh and grassy. The taste is grassy as well with a bit of spice. Bitter finish. Not really my thing, but not bad for what it is.
baobubba (433), Corvallis, Oregon, USA Jan 6, 2009 Coarse bubbly head with a clear amber body. Aroma is interesting, very citrusy for an amber but it has a hint of malty stickiness to stick to the style. Body seems a bit thin to me which translates to a thin tasting amber. All the parts are there, just not as flavorful as I’d like. Pretty good brew if you’re going to sit down for a few. ksurkin (89), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Jan 6, 2009 bottle from total wine in norfolk. pours a dark, hazy amber with thin vanilla head. aroma is actually very nice with citrus hops dominating and hints of pine, brown sugar, and flowers. flavor is a bit disappointing given the aroma. the hops seem to disappear, giving way to flavors of roasted malt, toast, a touch of sweetness, and very little citrus. mouthfeel is smooth with a short lingering bitterness. overall, a decent amber. ChainGangGuy (1808), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jan 4, 2009 Appearance: Pours a clear, deep amber-hued body with a thin, bubbly, white head.
Smell: Heady, hoppy nose with a distinct waft of pungent herbaceousness. Some toasty, vaguely caramelly malts layered underneath.
Taste: The malts come through as a mixture of toasted bread crusts and day-old biscuits. Faint, faint caramel sweetness. Thin touch of citrusy fruitiness. Woody, herbal hops with a medium, though biting bitterness. Finishes dry and thin with a lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: For me it was an average beer with a bit of extra bitterness, and though I was certainly ready to give my love to this beer, particularly as it’s the Season of Giving, but, well, I just didn’t care for it. aplusbreaks (185), , Colorado, USA Jan 4, 2009 thanks to jah noth for the bottle! Pours a really nice amber with a nice off white head. Aromas of.... cat liter box?! Also some hoppy and malty aromas. Flavors are a malty citrusy acidic mess. Its a shame my first rating for magic hat is so bad, because I actually really like these guys. JPDIPSO (4397), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Jan 4, 2009 Copper color liquid with a moderate cream colored head. Caramel, caramel malt and a touch of industrial hops, pine and grapefruit. Starts with some caramel, but dries out quickly with some lightly toasted grainy bread and citrus zest. An amber with a touch more bitterness, by any other name...
