harlequinn (2746), Tacoma, Washington, USA Jun 25, 2004 First of all this is one of the most delicious beers I have ever had in my life. A beautiful pour from a beautiful bottle. The pour is oily and black as night, literally no light shows through this one and we held a maglight to the side of the glass. Truly opaque, with a nice cloudy tan head. This one literally looks like a cup of cocoa and tastes like it too with a little bit of bourbon and kahlua splashed in for good measure. Has a very interesting ripe produce department smell, dare I say tomatoes? Very earthy and full of American oak and cedar cigarbox. Creamy milk chocolate Hershey’s. This is perfect, I really could not ask for a better tasting more perfectly balanced imperial stout. The lingering afteraste is great, lots of alchohol, but no burn at all once it warms. Rich oaky bourbon whiskey notes and lots of chocolate cocoa creaminess, gives way to a beautiful woodsy alchohol finish. Exquisite. My first 5!
bgburdman9 (722), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jun 24, 2008 An old rating i finally got to entering. 2004 sample. Aroma of a lot of bourbon and chocolate. Aroma of soy sauce also. Slightly like triple bock but i think i liked triple bock better. smashteroid (156), USA Mar 30, 2008 I had one or two 5oz. samples of this at a beer convention, and it has stuck in my mind as being the finest beer that Magic Hat ever brewed. It was served cold from a tap, and it was really thin and black with no head. definite chocolate, malts and maybe some added aroma from the barrels of oak or bourbon...not sure which. While certainly not being the best bourbon-aged imperial I have tried, it was definitely memorable for the sweetness of the chocolate combined with the alcohol. I think the warmth of the alcohol made it seem creamier than it appeared to be. Overall a fine beer now sadly retired. Right? It’s retired? I went on a tour of the brewery and they said it was... franksnbeans (265), Rockville, Maryland, USA Dec 23, 2007 Pours out like engine oil with a chocolate milk head. Smells of molassas, chocolate, maple syrup and caramel. Taste is mild and sweet. The flavors are the same as the nose with a very minimal bitter finish. Medium in the mouth and smooth as silk. A sipper but could sip this all night.
yobdoog (374), Woodridge, New York, USA Nov 28, 2007 Sampled during Manhattan Blind IS Tasting: Very rich, smooth with lots of alcohol. A bit creamy which is nice. Sweet and heavy. Pretty nice considering I have wanted to try this for some time. I wish this was available more but I guess thats what makes it so special. JoeMcPhee (3815), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Nov 17, 2007 Shared at Eyedrinkale’s Imperial Stout tasting. Great bottle... they should put a better beer in it. Black beer, woody with licorice in the nose. Peppery spiciness. Some herbal character. Chewy sweet palate. Fairly worty and sweet, but alcoholic at the same time. Shows milk chocolate, roast, and light plumminess. Fairly hot, but may improve with a few years on it.
