Commercial Description:
Made with Maris Otter pale malt, several different crystal malts, and just a touch of black malt, Blue Bell boasts a rich malt complexity balanced by generous additions of British hops (Challenger, Northdown, and East Kent Goldings). The English malt and hops are a natural with our yeast strain and we add some mineral salts to the water to enhance authenticity. Fruity and caramel notes are present. Copper-hued and medium bodied, Blue Bell is a little on the strong side but still makes a fine session beer. It is also the first beer made at Magnolia.

Tried the CASK version... Malty and sweet aroma. Looks copper with a thin head. Flavor is neutral with lots of caramel. Bitter finish. Not bad.

On tap at Magnolia brewpub in San Francisco. The chalkboard designates this as 4.9%. Slightly hazy orange amber with a thin cream pad. Aroma is faintly sweet toffee. Flavours are more interesting, with some beguiling fruit notes overlying the decent maltiness with an earthy quality as well. A nice representation of the style I thought.

Slightly hazy, deep amber. Smooth caramel, piney at the same time; a little metallic in the finish. Average American bitter. (on tap at brewpub)

(06.21.07) On tap at Magnolia Pub and Brewery, San Francisco, CA. 4.9% ABV. Hazy amber ale with small white head. No carbonation. Faint malt aroma. Medium bodied. Starts dry with light malt flavor; slight green tea/vegetal mushroom flavors; perfumy hop flavor. Medium length finish with light malt fade with light lingering hop bitterness. Good drinkable beer but on the watery side.

(On tap) Clear, warm, dark amber golden with the tiniest off-white head. Rather subdued, nutty aroma. Fairly light in body, lightly nutty flavours and then a somewhat odd, sweetish, candy-like edge - where did that come from? Finishes dry. 210307

Cask at the brewpub. Poured a clear reddish-orange color. Head was bubbly and white with good retention and lacing. Distinct aromas of malty caramel and graham cracker. Flavor was similar. Pretty good English style bitter.

Tried this on draft at the brewpub during a far too short visit on vacation. The brewer intentionally seeks to give the beer an ’English’ feel and succeeds magnificently. This was bitter, complex and refreshing and will be a ’must’ on my next trip.
