Commercial Description:
Made with Maris Otter pale malt, several different crystal malts, and just a touch of black malt, Blue Bell boasts a rich malt complexity balanced by generous additions of British hops (Challenger, Northdown, and East Kent Goldings). The English malt and hops are a natural with our yeast strain and we add some mineral salts to the water to enhance authenticity. Fruity and caramel notes are present. Copper-hued and medium bodied, Blue Bell is a little on the strong side but still makes a fine session beer. It is also the first beer made at Magnolia.

(06.21.07) On tap at Magnolia Pub and Brewery, San Francisco, CA. 4.9% ABV. Hazy amber ale with small white head. No carbonation. Faint malt aroma. Medium bodied. Starts dry with light malt flavor; slight green tea/vegetal mushroom flavors; perfumy hop flavor. Medium length finish with light malt fade with light lingering hop bitterness. Good drinkable beer but on the watery side.

Cask at the brewpub. Mild malty aroma; dark amber color with a decent beige head. Rather thin bodied with slight carbonation. Mild caramel with floral bitter. Finishes medium dry and decently bitter.

Amber colored, some lacing and retention. Aroma is lightly hoppy but still pleasant. Some citric grass notes. Medium to light body. Nothing special.

Copper coloured body with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of fresh english hops, with very little else, aside from some malt. Medium-bodied; Nice sharp hoppy flavour coupled with some malt and toffee and a bit of spice. Aftertaste shows the hops loud & clear. Coupled well with my dinner, but even more excited to see GOOD beers! I sampled this on draught, instead of a glass of wine at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California on 26-October-2007.

Tried the CASK version... Malty and sweet aroma. Looks copper with a thin head. Flavor is neutral with lots of caramel. Bitter finish. Not bad.
